No. 2 ‘Iolani has plenty left in the tank

By Billy Hull on February 6, 2017

After two nail-biting, down-to-the-final-second thrillers against Maryknoll in the last three days, the ‘Iolani boys basketball team is one win away from a stunning finish to the first round of ILH play. After losing by two to Punahou on Jan. 21, the defending state champion Raiders dropped a game behind both Maryknoll and the Buffanblu. They have since rattled off four straight wins, including a 43-41 victory over the Spartans on Senior Day on Saturday and a 43-42 victory in […]

Suguturaga will go on mission before Utah

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2017

Punahou all-state defensive end Miki Suguturaga will be rushing pass rushers for Utah someday. Some year. The senior confirmed on Monday that he will be on a two-year church mission before he enrolls at Utah. He signed a letter of intent to Utah on Wednesday during a signing event at the Sheraton Waikiki. Utah later removed him from a list of signees on its site, as well as its Twitter page, but it’s all just a formality. Soon enough, he’ll […]

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2017

Two weeks before the state championships, Sherice Ajifu took a stark look at her unbeaten Mid-Pacific Owls. They had pulled out a 43-37 win over St. Francis to complete the ILH Division II girls basketball season. After rolling over D-III competition by margins of 54, 49, 55 and 39 points, and league D-II foes by 16, 12, 14, 25, 28 and 35 points, the six-point win over St. Francis was jarring. It was the Owls’ first ILH girls basketball title […]

Impressive ‘Iolani girls could be back for more

By Nick Abramo on February 5, 2017

One of the best things about state Division I girls soccer is that one team does not dominate the landscape. Yes, Punahou has the most titles with 11, but it’s been since 2011 that the Buffanblu have ended their season with a win in the big game. Each year, it seems to be a different team that gets hot. Last year, it was Pearl City. This year, it was ‘Iolani. Two years ago, it was Mililani. It’s very hard to […]

Dedicated to ‘Kella: Kona three-peats

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2017

Very little has changed for Bobbie Awa in the 16 years since she became the girls basketball coach at her alma mater. The year 2001 was an oddity for students. The teachers’ strike shortened many things, including the seasons of student-athletes. But it was the beginning for Awa in her first varsity head coach after nearly a decade of starting and coaching the Kona Stingrays club with husband Donald. In ’03, with many of those original Stingrays — including niece […]
