Vierra leads Kamehameha girls to ILH crown

By Jerry Campany on February 9, 2017

No Teshya Alo, no problem. The Kamehameha girls wrestling team won its fourth straight ILH title on Thursday, continuing the legacy created by Alo three years ago. Alo graduated last year but the Warriors picked up another state crown without their heart and soul for the past three years. The Warriors crowned five ILH champions on Thursday, led by senior Zion-Grace Vierra. Vierra won her third ILH crown and team title with a 7-1 decision. Brooke Kawamura, Ashley Gooman, Paige […]

Pascua gets slam, Kamehameha boys get title

By Jerry Campany on February 9, 2017

Like others who have completed the ILH slam over the years, Iolani’s KJ Pascua left no doubt. Pascua won his fourth straight ILH title, this one at 170 pounds, by beating Kamehameha’s Chasyn Aipolani with a second round pin at Kamehameha on Thursday. Pascua only wrestled two matches, winning his semifinal bout by pin after running out to a 10-0 lead. Pascua is the first Iolani wrestler to complete the slam since Patrick Higa in 1986. Pascua helped Iolani lead […]

By Jerry Campany on February 9, 2017

The ILH wrestling championships begin in a matter of hours at Kamehameha with a bit of history waiting to be made. In addition to trying for its first repeat as a team since 2003-04, Iolani is looking to crown one of its greatest wrestlers ever. KJ Pascua is registered in the 170-pound bracket and going for his fourth straight ILH title. He would become the first Raider to sweep the league since the immortal Patrick Higa from 1983-86. With Blaysen […]

Kapolei’s Savea; No. 2 recruit join Poly Bowl

By Billy Hull on February 9, 2017

It’s been less than a month since the inaugural Polynesian Bowl at Aloha Stadium and the 2018 game already is adding more talent. Savea, who is 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, already holds offers from Texas Tech and Oregon State. ‘Iolani receiver Justin Genovia has also agreed to play in the game. Genovia finished second in the state with 1,135 receiving yards […]

Crusaders shock Maryknoll in ILH tournament

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2017

Allan Silva doesn’t have to go back very far to recall the last time he’s seen a special moment or two on the basketball hardwood. The Saint Louis coach was at Farrington just a few seasons ago when the Governors made a big splash, going deep into the postseason. They went from Division II champions to OIA D-I champions, and reached the state final before falling to ‘Iolani in 2014. In year three at Saint Louis, Silva’s Crusaders have hardly […]

Tagovailoa smooth in front of media horde

By Nick Abramo on February 8, 2017

Former Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, dressed in an Alabama/Nike polo shirt, entertained questions from a pack of Alabama media on signing day last week. Tagovailoa was asked about everything from the change of culture to his view on where he stands in making it on to the field for the Crimson Tide next season. The lefty quarterback, who led the Crusaders to the state title last season, has been taking classes at Alabama for four weeks. In this six-plus […]

Big Red Machine not same without Villa

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2017

There was almost nothing more difficult for Jessiya Villa. He sat there, moments after running through pre-game warmups, T-shirt and game shorts on. Sneakers, too. Normally, a player ruled out by a coach due to injury won’t suit up for a game. But Villa was two-thirds dressed and ready to jump onto the court at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium on Tuesday night. He wanted to play. Surely, the Kahuku Red Raiders wanted him there, too. But Brandyn Akana stuck by […]

Final girls hoops ballot in year of young guns

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2017

Anti-climatic, sure. Polls at the high school level are more like whipped cream than anything nutritious. But for voters, there are mini dilemmas. Konawaena’s win over Maryknoll in a thriller of a state-championship game makes the top spot on a ballot easy to pick. But what about the likes of ‘Iolani, which lost to Kamehameha, a state semifinalist, by just three points in an ILH playoff game. And ‘Iolani had only seven players in uniform. What about Mililani, which won […]
