By Nick Abramo on February 10, 2017

Darren Johnson will be the new football coach at Campbell, he confirmed Friday afternoon. Johnson was expected to be announced as the coach today on campus, when he will meet with the Sabers players. Johnson, who grew up on the North Shore and still lives in Punaluu, is looking forward to the new challenge, the source said. He is a former Kailua head coach and an assistant at Kahuku and Kapolei. A source added that Johnson is looking at this […]

Villa’s return sparks Kahuku to OIA title

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2017

The Villa effect is real. A month ago, Jessiya Villa was on the court when Kahuku played Kailua and won, 53-37. Fast-forward to the OIA playoffs on Tuesday: Villa is out with a concussion and Kahuku has to scramble for a 42-40 win over that same Kailua team. His return on Thursday did more than energize No. 1 Kahuku. The Red Raiders captured their eighth OIA boys basketball championship with a 70-60 victory over No. 6 Kapolei. It was Kapolei’s […]

Blonde Ambition: Kalani relishes 1st hoops title

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2017

Every follicle on Nathan Davis‘ head is screaming for intervention. The follicles will have to obey their host because Kalani’s boys basketball coach is a man of his word. Before the Falcons played Farrington in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II championship game on Thursday night, he confirmed that the deal was on. What deal? Back in preseason, flying home from a 3-0 run and the title at Waiakea’s tournament, his players expressed their dreams to him in a way […]

Kapolei’s Pagurayan hunting for fourth OIA title

By Jerry Campany on February 10, 2017

Kapolei’s Jayson Pagurayan‘s biggest goal comes next week at states, but he has a bit of history to make first. Pagurayan can secure his fourth OIA championship this weekend at Leilehua, putting him in elite company as the fourth to complete the slam since 1997. The others are Chaeden Grace Reyes of Moanalua and Farrington in 2013, Richard Torres of Kahuku in 2007 and McKinley’s Rene Suehiro in 2004. Those three have state championships to their credit. Pagurayan does not. […]

Radford’s Peralta going for rare OIA slam

By Jerry Campany on February 10, 2017

Radford’s Angela Peralta is in the 147-pound bracket of the OIA wrestling championships this weekend, seeded first and going for her fourth league title. If she can pull it off, she would become just the third girl to complete the slam. She would join Farrington’s Tani Ader from 2005-2008 and Moanalua’s Caylene Valdez from 2000-2003. To put the accomplishment in perspective, four girls have completed the state slam with only Valdez pulling off both. Peralta, who started her career at […]

Kahuku football head coach Vavae Tata is no longer the head coach of the Kahuku football team, according to multiple sources close to the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity late Thursday night. The sources said Tata was released by the Kahuku administration after his two-year stint with the Red Raiders that yielded a Division I state championship and an appearance in the first Open Division state final. Former NFL, University of Arizona and Kamehameha football player Makoa […]

Baldwin is legit state boys soccer contender

By Nick Abramo on February 10, 2017

It was hard to tell Thursday night which boys soccer state tournament victory was more impressive — Baldwin’s 1-0 win on penalty kicks over Mililani or Kaiser’s 2-1 upset of Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and second-seeded ‘Iolani. So, probably, equally impressive. Both are relative underdogs to win a state title, but Baldwin is carrying the flag for an entire island — and actually all of the Neighbor Islands. No outer-island team has won a boys soccer state crown in Division I. […]
