It’s official: Freitas is Kahuku interim head coach

Makoa Freitas was officially introduced as the Kahuku football interim head coach Sunday by the KahukuHigh.org website. Freitas takes over for Vavae Tata, who spent two years at the helm and brought the Red Raiders a Division I state championship and another appearance in the first Open Division state title game. The Waianae boys and Pearl City girls won Oahu Interscholastic Association wrestling championships at Leilehua on Saturday night. Angela Peralta of Radford became the third girl to win four OIA individual titles. She joins Farrington’s Tani Ader (2005-2008) and Moanalua’s Caylene Valdez (2000-2003). Kahuku is the top seed of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships, which tips off on Monday. The brackets and pairings were released late Saturday night. The Red Raiders, unbeaten in OIA play, will meet Monday’s Kalaheo-Maui winner on Wednesday at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. Punahou took the boys and girls team titles at the K Mark Takai State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, fueled by individual performances by Sydnee Whitty and Lia Foster, who won every event they entered. Of the 28 weight classes in the Oahu Interscholastic Association wrestling championships, the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds have advanced to tonight’s finals at Leilehua. Only two No. 1 seeds have fallen — Roosevelt’s Yuting He of Roosevelt in Girls 119 and Campbell’s Noah Respicio in Boys 172. The upsets of the top two seeds in the 28 divisions follow.
