Boys P4P: What to make of Moanalua’s Garcia?

By Jerry Campany on February 16, 2017

With another state tournament looming, the top of the Hawaii Prep World Pound-for-Pound rankings remains unchanged with Corey Cabanban of Saint Louis, Iolani’s KJ Pascua and Micah Tynanes of Campbell their usual dominating selves. After that, it gets a little tricky. Kapolei’s Jayson Pagurayan still belongs there despite losing in the OIA final to Moanalua’s Logan Garcia. Pagurayan was severely injured before the match, but gutted it out for one of the most heroic performances in ages before being stuck […]

Final 4: MIL’s Lunas, Spartans staking a claim

By Paul Honda on February 16, 2017

There is no real finality for the Final 4. But it is certainly a Fantastic 4. The Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships enters day 3, and there haven’t been any serious surprises. But there is some history. >> Lahainaluna’s venture into the Division I semifinal round is the first for the program since 1957. As in, before statehood. ’57 was the year of the first state basketball championship, which means it was the Territorial Championships. Lahainaluna lost in the semifinals […]

Hogland embraces ‘Iolani’s underdog status

By Paul Honda on February 16, 2017

He is the returning all-state Fab 15 player of the year. Hugh Hogland has no reason to be in awe of any other hoopster on the hardwood. ‘Iolani’s 6-foot-9 senior — they announce him as a forward, not a center, at home games — has earned his place among the finest players in state history. He is a force on both ends of the floor, a shot blocker with impeccable timing and body control, and a low-post scorer with excellent […]

Heartbreak, triumph: A wild, Wildcat season

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2017

There are lows and there are highs, near and far. The Konawaena Wildcats know this. On Saturday night, the Wildcats made the 112-mile trek from Kealakekua to the Afook-Chinen Hilo Civic Auditorium for the BIIF boys basketball championship game. Down most of the night, they rallied to take a three-point lead against the Waiakea Warriors. Konawaena, the regular-season first-place team, was unable to hold on. Calvin Mattos hit a clutch 3 and Kiai Apele stole the ensuing inbounds pass for […]

Saints march into D-II Big Dance as top seed

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2017

Bigger isn’t necessarily better. That’s the beauty of small-school sports, where fans are often far more passionate, even rabid, compared to their big-city contemporaries. The Division II bracket of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships tips off today at Kalani and St, Francis High Schools. Here’s a look at eight-team field powerhouses and underdogs, all chasing a title won by University last season. The Junior Rainbows didn’t make it to the big dance this time. Kalani bracket St. Francis (23-4, […]

Soccer talk (and Punahou is pretty good, too)

By Nick Abramo on February 14, 2017

The soccer season is over and another fine display of talent was there for the viewing at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium the last two weeks. Wouldn’t you know that Punahou would earn its 20th boys title and second in a row in the 44 years of the state tournament. The Buffanblu flew under the radar, somehow, before swooping in and gobbling up the hardware. They didn’t win their league and the odds seemed to favor other teams — like second-seeded Interscholastic […]

A look at Big Dance and why 16 would be sweet

By Paul Honda on February 13, 2017

This Monday dancing business is still not quite embedded into the minds of all prep hoop fans. But it is Monday and it is time for day one of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships. As it was with girls volleyball and girls basketball, Monday is something unique now. There was a three-day break between the first and second (quarterfinal) rounds for girls volleyball and basketball. With boys basketball, the break is two days, with the tourney resuming on a […]

Eighteen of the 20 Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound ranked wrestlers won their finals matches in league (Oahu Interscholastic Association, Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Maui Interscholastic League) championships this weekend. Only Kapolei’s Jayson Pagurayan (No. 4) and Kaiser’s Tiare Ikei (No. 10) lost, and they both fell to other p4p wrestlers. Pagurayan wrestled with an injured ankle. Here are how the boys and girls Top 10 p4p wrestlers fared: BOYS >> No. 1 Corey Cabanban (Saint Louis) def. Noah Brigoli […]
