Clemens keeps No. 6 Punahou in ILH race

By Billy Hull on March 16, 2017

Punahou baseball coach Keenan Sue doesn’t mind his players playing multiple sports throughout the year. In fact, he thinks they are better prepared for baseball by doing it. “The great thing about all of our guys that are multi-sport athletes is that this is just another sport for them,” Sue said Tuesday after his sixth-ranked Buffanblu beat No. 4 Saint Louis 2-0 at Goeas Field. “They just come out and compete. They’re not thinking much about it.” Take Duke Clemens […]

ILH boys tame Hawaii Prince

By Jerry Campany on March 15, 2017

The number of rounds in the 60s in ILH competition doubled on Wednesday, when two boys took advantage of the conditions in the league’s fourth tournament. Punahou senior Andrew Chin shot his second sub-70 round in three starts with a 67 at Hawaii Prince on Wednesday, the lowest score in the ILH this year. Chin opened the season with a 69 at Mililani. Teammate Remington Hirano finished two strokes back on the Ewa plains for his lowest score of the […]

Tabura’s emergence mighty for Na Menehune

By Paul Honda on March 15, 2017

The count was 3-1 on Joey Cantillo, his Kailua team down 7-0 in the top of the sixth. Cantillo was 0-for-1 at that point with a flyout, and he was hit by a pitch. High. It wasn’t anything to start a skirmish with Moanalua southpaw Randy Tabura, but two competitive lefties will often make things interesting. The 3-1 pitch from Tabura: Cantillo jumped all over it, sending it deep but foul down the right-field line. The ball sailed well over […]

Kaaialii, Yamaguchi lead “upset” of Sabers

By Paul Honda on March 14, 2017

In their ace pitcher’s eyes, a come-from-behind 2-1 win over two-time defending state champion Campbell was not an upset. Pearl City senior Tyanna “Peanut Butter” Kaaialii was potent against Campbell, mowing down 10 batters with just two walks and one hit batter, finishing with a three-hitter as the Chargers improved to 4-0 in the difficult OIA West on Tuesday afternoon. It took a botched ground ball by Campbell’s normally reliable infield to spark Pearl City’s sixth-inning comeback. That led to […]

Kalani’s Manta collects first win of golf season

By Jerry Campany on March 14, 2017

With Kaiser’s Malia Nam not in the field, Miki Manta of Kalani earned her first win of the OIA golf season on Monday at Hoakalei Golf Course. Manta, the reigning OIA champion, shot a 76 on the par-72 layout to beat the field by seven strokes. Teammate Michelle Kim was second with an 83 and nobody else broke 90 but the Falcons had three of the top four golfers with Melissa Yago taking fourth with a 92. It was the […]

More questions in baseball than softball

By Billy Hull on March 14, 2017

We’re closing in on a full month into the softball and baseball regular seasons and the two sports seem to be shaping out very differently. In softball, there’s no doubt who everyone is chasing. The defending state champion Campbell Sabers were a unanimous No. 1 pick in the first Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 rankings and nothing has changed since. Despite playing in a tough OIA West, the Sabers have rolled to a 3-0 start outscoring quality opponents by a […]
