Saints make sweet music on and off diamond

By Paul Honda on March 18, 2017

Somewhere during those breezy winds and a delay between the top two teams in ILH Division II baseball, the Saints of St. Francis found a reason to sing. As the lines were redone and the delay lingered on 17 minutes past the scheduled starting time of 6:30 p.m., the Saints paid no mind. Someone hit the play button on what sounded like an old-school boombox in the dugout. And before anyone could stop them, the Saints were lurching ahead, word […]

Two teams — Campbell and Mililani — have won five of the last eight Division I softball state tournaments, so one can bet that a lot is riding on Saturday’s game at the McKinley field. Both teams are 3-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West and in a tight race with Pearl City (4-0) and Leilehua (3-2). By Nick Abramo on March 16, 2017

Two people named Jon Stanley were in the Moanalua gym Wednesday night — one a former Olympic volleyball standout and the other, his son, a budding high school player. The elder Jon Stanley is the Kaiser head coach, and the younger is a junior team leader for the Cougars and the third of a pretty potent volleyball trio of Stanley sons. First came Clay Stanley, now 39, a highly decorated opposite for the University of Hawaii who played in the 2004, […]

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2017

Here’s a look at what coaches had to say about some of the 2017 Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball All-State Fab 15 selections. They had much to say about the Fab 15, and bit more about those who missed the list, which is to say that we could’ve had a Fab 20, no question. The “Extra Sauce” comments are by this pupule writer, just a bit of information to complete the summaries. Jason Justus, Lahainaluna Coach of the Year Russ Fitzgerald, Leilehua: […]
