VIDEO: Tua begins spring drills at Alabama

By Hawaii Prep World on March 22, 2017

Instead of going through the final few months of high school on campus with many of his best friends, former Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is already getting to work in Tuscaloosa. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser player of the year and all-time career passing leader in Hawaii went through his first spring practice with Alabama on Tuesday. Video of Tagovailoa participating in some drills was put together by the website AL.com. Tagovailoa is battling returning starter Jalen Hurts and fellow freshman […]

Kamehameha steals one to set up showdown

By Billy Hull on March 21, 2017

Tuesday’s ILH baseball tilt between No. 4 Kamehameha and No. 5 Punahou seemed destined to go the Buffanblu’s way. Twice, when the Warriors seemed ready to break through against gritty Punahou starter Kyle Uemura, the Buffanblu came up with SportsCenter worthy catches in the outfield. First it was left fielder Kai Terada-Herzer, who made a diving snare at full speed of a line drive by Micah Kinoshita to lead off the top of the second inning and rob Kamehameha of […]

Coaches clinic highlights HBVI this week

By Jerry Campany on March 21, 2017

The Punahou boys volleyball program rarely seems to get much out of the annual Hawaii Boys Volleyball Invitational, but this year might be different. The Buffanblu are entered in ‘Iolani’s tournament, sharing a pool with KS-Maui, McKinley and Redondo Union (Calif.). Punahou has won the title the past two years, beating Moanalua in the final each time. Punahou is expected to roll through its pool, but will get a chance to sharpen its skills on Friday after playing Redondo Union. […]

Pearl City is new No. 1 in softball

By Hawaii Prep World on March 20, 2017

According to the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 released Monday, an ILH vs. OIA West softball classic would be quite a big deal. The top eight teams in the rankings belong in either league with the OIA West holding down the top two spots. Defending state champion Campbell is no longer the top-ranked team after losing 2-1 last Tuesday to new-No. 1 Pearl City, which is the only undefeated team in the OIA West left heading into this week’s […]

By Hawaii Prep World on March 20, 2017

Kahuku senior guard Jessiya Villa, who was named the Honolulu Star-Advertiser player of the year just over a week ago, was selected as the Gatorade Hawaii boys basketball player of the year on Monday. Villa averaged 17.1 points, 6.2 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in leading Kahuku to its first-ever state title in boys basketball. As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Jessiya will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive […]

An ideal example of Mililani’s ‘little things’ lesson

By Nick Abramo on March 20, 2017

The Mililani softball roster is on an 8×11 white piece of paper with mostly black type. At the bottom of the page, there are a list reminders for the team in its day-to-day effort to improve. A few of the examples are in red type highlighted in yellow, and one of them reads, “Little things make big things happen.” The late John Wooden — the legendary UCLA basketball coach — is the originator of that quote, but the lesson was learned, painfully, […]

Meilleur baffles Kamehameha again despite delay

By Paul Honda on March 18, 2017

The reality about the strange pre-game delay of 81 minutes on Saturday afternoon when second-place Saint Louis and first-place Kamehameha met for an ILH baseball game at Ala Wai Field is this: Not only were both coaches unwilling to play with only one umpire, but both we considering postponing the game. Game time was 3 p.m. on a steamy, sunny afternoon. By 3:30 p.m., fans sitting in the bleachers began to ask aloud what was going on. It seemed that […]

Lehl, Wilson win track events in California

By Jerry Campany on March 18, 2017

The Punahou track and field team will be bringing some gold back from its weekend in California. Reigning state cross country champion Connor Lehl ran a 4:24.72 to win the 1,600 meters at the Mustang Relays in Mira Costa, Calif., on Saturday, closing with a 2:03 in the final 800 meters to earn the win. Ian Irish of Palos Verdes was second in 4:25.11. Lehl, who also ran in relays, was the only Hawaii runner in the event. Sophomore Kennedy […]
