Kamehameha takes ILH lead for now

By Paul Honda on March 24, 2017

For all of the chess games and field warfare and, ultimately, unmatched parity of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, it took the existence of a new rule to make the season’s biggest game to date to put a wrench in the machine. It was mostly unanticipated. Few expected Kamehameha’s Hunter Breault to struggle*. He came away with the win as his team edged co-front runner Saint Louis 1-0 on a hot, still afternoon at Goeas Field. But he also walked […]

Kamehameha, Baldwin to host California teams

By Nick Abramo on March 24, 2017

Kamehameha will host Carson High from Carson, Calif., for a football game on Aug. 25, Warriors head coach Abu Maafala confirmed today. The Warriors are one of at least seven Hawaii teams that will play mainland squads this fall. The others are Saint Louis, Punahou, Mililani, Kahuku, Kalani and Baldwin. Kamehameha went 3-6 a year ago in Maafala’s first year at the helm. Carson finished 4-6, losing to Palisades (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) 41-0 in the Los Angeles City Section playoffs. […]

Maryknoll baseball protest upheld by ILH

By Nick Abramo on March 24, 2017

A March 16 baseball matchup that initially ended with Punahou beating Maryknoll 6-0 is now an incomplete game. A protest by Maryknoll head coach Eric Kadooka was upheld by the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, according to Buffanblu head coach Keenan Sue. The contest, which was played at Ala Wai Community Park, will go back to the top of the seventh inning with Punahou at-bat and leading 2-0 with runners on first and second. According to Sue, Kadooka protested Punahou baserunner […]

Saint Louis to host 2 mainland teams in ’17

By Nick Abramo on March 23, 2017

Cal Lee is gearing up for yet another year of coaching high school football, and he’s excited. He’s also disappointed in a few things. First, the positives: Lee’s Crusaders will be playing against two mainland teams this fall. On the weekend of Sept. 22-23, Saint Louis will entertain Narbonne (Los Angeles). The date and Oahu site will be determined. “They went 14-1 last year and they had 11 D-I college players,” Lee said. “They’re not coming down here because they […]

Q & A: Kamehameha senior Payton Bosque

By Paul Honda on March 23, 2017

From a physical standpoint, Payton Bosque is not much different from her namesake, the late, great Chicago Bears running back, Walter Payton. She is compact, fluid and a playmaker in the open field. Her field, though, happens to be the pool, where she is a fifth-team All-American in water polo. The University of Hawaii-bound standout was the subject of our prep feature in Tuesday’s print edition. She took time to do this Q&A with Hawaii Prep World before practice on […]

‘Iolani softball thriving on late-inning drama

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 22, 2017

Two late-inning rallies over the last two days left ‘Iolani tied atop the ILH Division I softball standings. The seventh-ranked Raiders forced extra innings before pulling out an 8-7 win over Punahou in the eighth on Tuesday. They followed that up by erasing a two-run deficit in the sixth in a 4-2 home victory over No. 4 Maryknoll on Wednesday. “The first thing one of the coaches said in our huddle was, ‘stop giving me gray hairs,’” said Iolani’s Kenedi […]

Kramer’s effect at Kamehameha: 2.78 ERA

By Paul Honda on March 22, 2017

Jayson Kramer was exhausted, perhaps, but entirely thrilled. The route from college pitcher at Hawaii to pitching coach at Kamehameha has been unexpected for him. So was the route from college to teacher at Radford High School. In fact, following his career with the Rainbows, Kramer was eyeballing a future in law enforcement. Then came a chance reunion with a former teammate. “I was trying to become a policeman and I was in the process,” he said on Tuesday afternoon. […]

Punahou tuning in at higher frequency

By Paul Honda on March 22, 2017

Most humans experience planet earth and the surrounding solar system in three dimensions with five senses. Rick Tune and his Punahou volleyball team, arguably the best volleyball program in the nation, decipher information at another level. With just one hitting error in a 25-15, 25-16 sweep of ‘Iolani on Tuesday, Tune enjoyed the excellence, but searched into execution, fulfillment and efficiency foremost. Could the Buffanblu have utilized their back-row attack more? That’s what Tune, a seven-time state-championship head coach, thought […]
