Kamehameha, Campbell move up in rankings

By Nick Abramo on March 27, 2017

Kamehameha was a big mover in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 poll released today. The Warriors (10-2), by virtue of their 1-0 victory over Saint Louis on Thursday, climbed three spots to No. 2 in the rankings. The result was upheld after Saint Louis protested the game believing Kamehameha ace Hunter Breault threw more pitches than he was allowed in the new pitch count rule implemented this year. Baldwin, the defending Division I state champion, remained at No. 1 […]

Saint Louis baseball protest denied

By Nick Abramo on March 27, 2017

Kamehameha’s 1-0 victory over Saint Louis on Thursday at Goeas Field will stand. A protest made by Crusaders coach George Gusman was denied by the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, he said today. Gusman believed Warriors starting pitcher Hunter Breault was over the maximum pitch count. Breault threw 101 pitches against Saint Louis and also threw 20 on Tuesday in a 5-2 win over Punahou at Goeas Field. The ILH denied the protest because the rule is 110 maximum pithes on […]

Damien to play Villa Park at Diaz Stadium

By Paul Honda on March 27, 2017

In a little more than four months, the championship football program at Damien will be at full throttle again. Coming off a 7-3 season and back-to-back Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II titles, Damien has a full slate in the first three weeks of preseason. The Monarchs will play Castle, travel to Kealakehe (Aug. 12) and then host Villa Park (Calif.) at Farrington’s brand-new Skippa Diaz Stadium (Aug. 18). Castle is in transition with a new coach, John Hao. Kealakehe, […]

Maryknoll 11: Elevator up, elevator down

By Paul Honda on March 26, 2017

Building practically from scratch has a way of thickening the skin of coaches, players and supporters. Coach John Uekawa has that thick skin, but make no mistake, he isn’t numb to the ups and downs of his young Maryknoll softball team either. With just one senior on the roster, after years of literally building a program — the facility at Sand Island State Park is a thing of beauty and a penultimate example of giving, laborious hands — the Lady […]

Surging forward: Punahou Power Company

By Paul Honda on March 26, 2017

There are the Houston Rockets, the NBA franchise that makes offense look so easy with James Harden driving the bus. There are the Atlanta Falcons, an NFL offensive juggernaut with Matt Ryan at quarterback and Julio Jones at wide receiver, a franchise that finally shored up its defense enough to reach the Super Bowl. Set any clock alarm to the Punahou time zone, however, if bomb-squad power and scoring on the softball diamond are needed. The Buffanblu (4-3) are on […]

Hope not lost at Kapolei in wild OIA West

By Paul Honda on March 26, 2017

For any coach, even Stacie Mahoe, it was not an easy task to embrace. Yet, nobody knows more about the Kapolei Hurricanes softball program. With the retirement of Tony Saffrey, who guided the ‘Canes to the OIA crown last season, as well as in ’04 and ’05, Mahoe was tabbed to take over a largely successful program after 14 seasons as an assistant coach. She was also an interim head coach for a season along the way, but that, of […]

Kaiser becoming dangerous team in OIA East

By Billy Hull on March 25, 2017

Just as he was in preseason and at the beginning of the regular season and even after an 0-3 start, Kaiser first-year coach Kila Ka’aihue was supremely confident about his Cougars baseball team after a 9-3 win over No. 6 Kalani on Wednesday. “We’ve got a really good ball club,” said Ka’aihue, who played in 126 major league games with the Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics before retiring two years ago. “They’re learning and getting better every day, which […]

Kapolei alum Hopeau signs professional contract

By Hawaii Prep World on March 24, 2017

The Seattle Sounders announced Wednesday that Kapolei alum Shandon Hopeau has signed a professional contract with the club’s reserve team that plays in the United Soccer League. Hopeau, a two-time OIA West player of the year, signed directly from Sounders Academy, where he scored four goals in his first two games. He played with S2 last season and earned a starting job and was good enough during league play that he was invited to train with the Sounders’ MLS squad […]
