‘Iolani opts for Division II in state football

By Nick Abramo on April 1, 2017

After two years of playing against Division I football competition, ‘Iolani is going down to Division II in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, Raiders coach Wendell Look confirmed Friday. In addition, Look said that ‘Iolani has declared itself a D-II team for the state tournament. D-II is the bottom level of the new three-tier state tourney system. “Division II is what’s best for our program at this time,” Look said. “Two years is enough at the D-I level. We had the […]

Saturday’s the big day in the ILH, maybe

By Nick Abramo on March 31, 2017

Coach Thomas Perkins gave this advice to his second-ranked Kamehameha Warriors after Friday’s loss to Punahou: “Today’s done. We’re just gonna come back and be who we are and play our game.” It’s a huge day Saturday in Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball. A regular-season champion could be determined, but if both Kamehameha (11-3) and Saint Louis (11-3) win, another game would be held next week to determine that title and a spot in the state tournament. But if one […]

Kalani excited for rare mainland football trip

By Billy Hull on March 31, 2017

A quick scroll though the Kalani football engine tells us that the Falcons have not played a football game on the mainland since beating Earl Wooster High School in Reno, Nev., in 1974 with senior Craig Ogata starting at quarterback. Four decades later under second-year head coach Scott Melemai, the Falcons are finally going back. Kalani will play Mount Tahoma (Wash.) in Tacoma on Sept. 8. The T-Birds, who are coached by Roosevelt alum Ricky Daley, went 3-7 last year. […]

Young Kaiser Cougars overcoming adversity

By Paul Honda on March 31, 2017

There’s a wild learning curve for young teams, and the Kaiser Cougars have been riding that road from day one. Mitch Matsumoto knows the ups and downs, the highs and lows well. The eighth-year Kaiser coach had previous stops at Moanalua, Anuenue and Island Pacific. He is, in so many ways, the right manager for the current Cougars, who are talented, young, erratic and undeterred. Despite the loss of two starting players to academic probation, the Cougars endured their first […]

Return of Jacobs-Kea a boost for Warriors

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2017

The mood was not sparkly three weeks ago at Kamehameha’s softball field. Even in the afterglow of a decisive victory over rival Punahou — a 12-1 TKO win in six innings — there was a pensive vibe. Ace pitcher Rayla Jacobs-Kea immediately got her shoulder wrapped in ice. She felt a soreness and ache in that pitching shoulder she said she had never felt before. Was this the real deal for a Kamehameha squad that had begun the ILH season […]

Taulia Tagovailoa will not return for senior year

By Nick Abramo on March 30, 2017

Galu Tagovailoa has been busy. The husband and father of four — including two daughters and two quarterbacking sons — just sold his house in Kapolei last week and is moving the family to Alabaster, Ala., as first reported by Hawaii Prep World six weeks ago. They fly out April 3 to the state where his eldest son, Tua, is already living — on the campus of the University of Alabama. Tua, the oldest son, is a 5-star recruit and a former Saint […]

Spartans’ Kadooka at corner of patience, urgency

By Paul Honda on March 29, 2017

Somewhere between the seven baseball state championships (2004-10) at Punahou and this first season as head coach at Maryknoll, Eric Kadooka has transformed and evolved one step at a time. Losing, though, still leaves a bitter taste. When he looked across the diamond at his former program, Kadooka saw the Buffanblu, a 7-5 team in a ruthless ILH chase, armed with talent and experience and depth up and down the roster. His own Spartans? Young. Just three senior starters, including […]

Major leagues are scouting Hawaii talent

By Nick Abramo on March 28, 2017

Major league scouts don’t announce themselves when they show up to a Hawaii high school baseball game and they don’t wear a badge identifying who they are. But they are here in Hawaii this spring checking out a handful of talented players and bringing back their reports to the big clubs. Many Hawaii fans are already aware of the MLB scouts’ interest in Kailua left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo and Kamehameha right-hander Hunter Breault. But the scouting has not been limited […]
