Kaiser’s Kristen O’Handley picked up this year’s track and field season where she left off last year. O’Handley, who won the 100 and 200 and chipped in on a relay win at last year’s state championships, won two individual events and was in on two relay wins at Saturday’s Yamamoto Invitational at Mililani. Punahou volleyball is Best of the West

The Punahou boys volleyball team blitzed through the Best Of The West tournament in Poway, Calif., this week, taking the gold bracket championship. The Buffanblu opened the tournament with a sweep of Mira Costa (25-20, 25-17) then took out Corona Del Mar 22-25, 25-19, 15-13 in the second round. There will be no wire-to-wire dominance in ILH golf this year. Iolani’s Kengo Aoshima fired a 68 at Olomana to take an ILH tournament on friday, beating Mid-Pacific senior Zack Kaneshiro by three shots. Kaneshiro had the edge on Aoshima in the first two tournaments of the year, winning at Mililani with a 73 and at Leilehua with a 68. It was sheer joy for Ashlyn Okamoto when the ball left her bat and sailed over the left-center field fence at the Kamehameha softball field. The ‘Iolani senior shortstop is not known for power hitting. There is certainly no bias against heavyweights in the ILH offices. Iolani heavyweight Dane Yamashiro was selected the ILH’s most valuable player in boys wrestling on Friday. The senior wrapped up his ILH career with a second league title at 285 pounds and followed it up with a repeat at the state championships. The Kahuku football team will play in Las Vegas for the second year in a row, interim head coach Makoa Freitas said today. On Sept. 9, the Red Raiders will play Utah Division 5A state champion Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) in the inaugural Polynesian Football Classic as the second game of a doubleheader at Sam Boyd Stadium.
