Nam outlasts Manta in OIA golf classic

By Hawaii Prep World on April 18, 2017

Kaiser’s Malia Nam and Kalani’s Miki Manta — the previous two OIA individual golf medalists — engaged in a classic duel on the golf course at Turtle Bay on Tuesday with Nam outlasting Manta in nine playoff holes to claim her second OIA title in three years. Nam two-putted from roughly 25 feet on the par-3 15th hole at the Fazio Course to snatch the victory after Manta’s tee shot went left of the green. Manta attempted a putt from off the […]

Punahou ranked 5th in the nation

By Hawaii Prep World on April 18, 2017

The Punahou boys volleyball team is ranked No. 5 in the nation in the latest MaxPreps rankings released Tuesday. The Buffanblu added the Clash of the Titans to their impressive resume this season, sweeping both Kamehameha-Hawaii and Huntington Beach (Calif.), which is ranked No. 15 in the same poll. Punahou has failed to drop a set to a Hawaii team this season and won the Best of the West tournament last month. During the two-day event, Punahou went 6-1 and […]

By Hawaii Prep World on April 17, 2017

With wins over Campbell and Mililani to end the regular season, Pearl City earned the top spot out of the brutally difficult OIA West heading into the OIA softball playoffs that begin Wednesday with four first-round games in Division I. Moanalua and Kailua are still waiting to determine who will get the first-round bye out of the East as the No. 2 seed. Na Menehune and the Surfriders finished 9-3 and split the head-to-head matchups. Roosevelt (10-2) is the top […]

RECRUITING: Fehoko to LSU; Pagano to Oregon

By Hawaii Prep World on April 17, 2017

Two of the best Hawaii high school football players who had been playing Division I football for multiple years decided to transfer this offseason. Defensive linemen Breiden Fehoko (Farrington) and Scott Pagano (Moanalua) enjoyed the recruiting process all over again before making their decisions. Kailua-Campbell title game was a thriller

By Nick Abramo on April 16, 2017

It starts with the coaches. On one side, you have Corey Ishigo. On the other, it’s Rory Pico. Once, they were gritty second basemen for the University of Hawaii baseball team. Now, they’re gritty, no-nonsense coaches. To put it more clearly, they are baseball men through and through, and their players are true reflections of what they bring to the table … and diamond. Those coaches had their teams ready on Saturday in the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship game and […]

Kaiser’s Nam shooting for 2nd OIA golf title

By Christian Shimabuku on April 16, 2017

One stroke was all that separated Kasier’s Malia Nam and Kalani’s Miki Manta at last year’s OIA girls’ golf championships. Nam was gunning for OIA title No. 2 at the time, having won the previous year as a freshman. Instead, Manta pulled ahead for a 5-over 149 over two days to come out on top. And thus, another chapter in the rivalry between two of the top juniors in the state was closed. Although Nam considers Manta to be a […]

ILH crown coming down to arms race

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2017

In the high-powered arms race of baseball, even the mightiest arsenal wants every competitive edge. In the midst of the ILH Division I baseball tournament, with Saint Louis and Kamehameha playing for the title on Tuesday thanks to the Crusaders’ 2-0 win on Saturday, fans are seeing the rough equivalent of a championship series. Saint Louis has a row of offensive weapons and, as Punahou coach Keenan Sue remarked last week, the best defensive infield in the state. Put Chase […]

St. Francis still in driver’s seat of ILH D-II race

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2017

If there was ever a wall that made for a obstacle in the life of this season’s Damien Monarchs baseball team, it would be the one they’re trying to climb right now. Damien came through with a gritty, everyone-all-in 9-6 victory over regular-season champion St. Francis on Saturday, which kept the Monarchs’ postseason hopes alive. Unlike the ILH’s Division I baseball chase, which leads to two state-tournament berths, the D-II scramble provides just one state berth. That means Damien’s win, […]
