Campbell’s 3-peat the most sweet

By Paul Honda on May 6, 2017

Veteran leadership plus young additions and sage coaching do not always add up to a championship. When the Campbell Sabers took the field in defense of their state softball championship — they had won the last two, actually — there was doubt among observers. For much of the spring, the skepticism about Campbell’s sometimes punchless lineup was valid. Cruel, perhaps, but valid. For weeks, months even, senior slugger Jocelyn Alo was walked borderline intentionally, often being issued a pass without […]

Na Alii work their way to a state title

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 6, 2017

For Aiea, practice did indeed make perfect. In building a state title contender, Na Alii’s workouts often exceeded coach Alan Higuchi’s practice plans. “This team, this year, they seemed to enjoy practices,” Higuchi said. “Usually my practices last 2, 2 1/2 hours. But the girls just enjoyed their time at the park. I’d look at my watch and go, ‘whoa, 3 1/2 hours went by.’ But they wanted to be there. … Credit goes to them that they wanted to put […]

Chalk up another state title for Hawaii Baptist

By Billy Hull on May 6, 2017

Hawaii Baptist’s lone senior was the one standing at the service line with a seventh straight Division II state championship on the line. Kellen Takatsuka, a 5-foot-8 outside hitter who starts alongside 5-foot-9 junior Michael Johnson, served the final four points of the Eagles’ 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 sweep of Kapaa in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships on Saturday night at Blaisdell Arena. HBA (23-0) extended its state tournament winning streak to 22 with a sweep of the […]

Decade of dominance on the line

By Brian McInnis on May 6, 2017

Few schools have been as dominant in a single sport over time as Punahou in girls water polo. The Buffanblu go for their 10th straight title tonight — and 12th in 14 years of the event — at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. They are 35-0 all-time in state tournament play heading into the 6 p.m. tipoff. Punahou, coached by the masterful Ken Smith, is deep, balanced and talented, as always. Only Kamehameha, which got swept by Punahou in the […]

Epic battles sharpened Sabers, Chargers

By Paul Honda on May 6, 2017

The instant classic had a classic finish for the two-time defending state champion Campbell Sabers. For Pearl City, a team that had already beaten Campbell in three dramatic one-run games during OIA play, there was nothing they could do as the Sabers chipped and chiseled for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Pearl City 5-4. And just like that, the Chargers’ ultimate dream winning a state softball championship ended on the pristine grounds of […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 6, 2017

The West will rule again in the Division I  state softball tournament. Top-seeded Mililani ensured the state title will remain within the OIA West for the fourth straight year with a 14-4 rout of Kamehameha in the semifinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship on Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Mililani senior Shannon Pascua-Stanton went 3-for-3 with a home run and a double and drove in seven runs as the Trojans set up a fourth consecutive All-OIA West […]
