Entries are out for this weekend’s Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships at Keaau High School. Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Saydee Aganus is the top qualifier in the girls 100 hurdles (14.34) and 100 dash (12.29). O’Handley has the second-fastest time in the 100 (12.31) while Aganus has the […]

HAWAII GROWN: FSU’s Dung continues to shine

By Billy Hull on May 9, 2017

Kamalani Dung had more than 50 scholarship offers coming out of Kamehameha and has admitted in the past she only knew how to throw two pitches in high school. Her transformation into a complete Division I-caliber ace pitcher for Fresno State has happened quickly and with stunning results in her sophomore season for the Bulldogs. Dung was named Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week for the second time in eight days on Monday as she carries the Bulldogs (32-20, […]

Q&A: Kaiser track athlete Kristen O’Handley

By Paul Honda on May 9, 2017

She’s busy enough, but seems to thrive on the nonstop life of being a Kaiser scholar-athlete. Breaking records and competing in as many as six track and field events is par for the course in the life of Kristen O’Handley. She even added the shot put and long jump to her resume — qualifying for states in the latter — but will focus on “only” six events at the Island Movers/HHSAA State Championships this weekend at Keaau High School’s facility. […]

OIA West dominates final softball rankings

By Hawaii Prep World on May 8, 2017

In reality, we’ll never quite know who the best softball team in the OIA West actually was. Was it Pearl City, which at 9-2 was the only OIA West team to lose less than three games in the regular season to finish at the top of the standings? Was it Mililani, who beat the Chargers 3-1 to win the OIA tournament title and earn the No. 1 seed in the state tournament? Or was it Campbell, which despite finishing third […]

Punahou got past its moment of doubt

By Nick Abramo on May 8, 2017

Altogether it was just a little more than 5 minutes, but you could see it on the faces of the Punahou players – just a little bit of doubt. The heavily favored Buffanblu tried in vain to fight off Kamehameha-Hawaii in the second set of Saturday night’s state Division I boys volleyball final. The opposing Warriors sensed something amiss on the other side of the court and they pounced to win the set and tie the match at 1-1. How […]

Enriques to retire as KS-Hawaii coach

By Nick Abramo on May 7, 2017

No one would doubt that Rick Tune is an authority on volleyball. And the former collegiate star and current Punahou coach, fresh off an eighth state championship in nine years, had somewhat of a bombshell to rock the Hawaii high school volleyball world Saturday night. Highly successful Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Guy Enriques will not be in charge of the Warriors next season, according to Tune, whose Buffanblu had just gotten past Enrqiues’ team in four sets in the Division I state […]
