Punahou awaits KS-Hawaii’s best punch

By Nick Abramo on May 5, 2017

Going by past results, Saturday night’s Division I boys volleyball state tournament at Blaisdell Arena has a heavyweight in one corner and a light heavyweight in the other. The old-timey boxing announcer could announce Punahou as “the reigning five-time champeen.” The opponent, Kamehameha-Hawaii, is the annual challenger, the team that gets super close, but can’t bring home the hardware. Punahou coach Rick Tune is relishing the matchup against the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Warriors. “They have a fantastic coach, Guy […]

All eyes will be on Iolani’s Dane Yamashiro as he goes for his third state title at the Atlas Insurance Agency state judo tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center tomorrow, but the early rounds will be filled with drama on the girls side. Three different brackets contain more than one state champion, beginning with the 112-pound class where Pearl City’s Mikayla Abe and Mililani’s Miyu Wise reside. Abe and Wise are on separate sides of the bracket but Abe would […]

KS-Hawaii’s volleyball train is in town

By Nick Abramo on May 5, 2017

Every year at this time, Kamehameha-Hawaii shows up for the Division I boys volleyball state tournament. And the Warriors’ usual modus operandi is to make it far but not win the championship. Coach Guy Enriques was clear about what was needed to get past the remaining squads in their way. “We need to play a flawless match,” he said after a three-set sweep of Waipahu in the quarterfinals Thursday at Radford. He added that if any of his teams of […]

Roosevelt’s Brooks joins elite company

By Brian McInnis on May 4, 2017

Roosevelt’s Taylor Brooks scored on Hawaii Prep Academy on Thursday in the HHSAA/Stanford Carr Development water polo state championship quarterfinals. And scored and scored some more until the Rough Riders not only had a win, but some rarefied air for the senior in the 14-4 victory. The 5-foot-9 senior attacker tallied nine goals, more than all but one other player in the history of the tournament (winners bracket games only). A former Rough Rider, Rachel Kamai, had 11 goals in […]

By Billy Hull on May 4, 2017

There aren’t a lot of routine wins at this point of the high school softball season. OIA champion and No. 1 seed Mililani survived some tense moments late to pull out a 7-6 victory over Maui to advance to the Division I semifinals of the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships tonight at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Merilis Rivera finished a triple shy of the cycle with three runs and two RBIs and Shannon Pascua-Stanton went 3-for-4 with a triple and two […]

Chargers stay focused to advance to semis

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 4, 2017

Chad Obara considers this year’s Pearl City softball team one of the most focused clubs he’s coached. So the Chargers weren’t fazed by a quick turnaround or an early deficit on Thursday. Nor were they distracted by the opportunities ahead after defeating third-seeded Lahainaluna 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championships. “That’s how we’ve been taking the whole season,” Obara said. “Staying in the moment and concentrating on what’s at hand.” The Chargers arrived at Rainbow […]

Quick turnaround for Pearl City

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 4, 2017

When it comes to Pearl City’s state softball tournament schedule, the last shall indeed be first. The Chargers were the last team on the field on Wednesday night, closing out a 6-1 win over Kapolei just before 10 p.m. They’ll be back in Manoa Thursday morning in advance of a noon matchup with MIL champion and third-seeded Lahainaluna in the first of four DataHouse/HHSAA Division I State Softball Championship quarterfinal games at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The first-round schedule was […]
