MaxPreps pegs Kahuku as No. 1 in Hawaii

Kahuku is the top football team in Hawaii this preseason, according to MaxPreps.com. On Thursday, the website released its list of the No. 1 team in each state, and chose Kahuku with the following explanation: “The Red Raiders check in as the No. 1 team from the Aloha State largely because of superstar quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava. ‘Iolani to ‘remember Eddie Hamada’

Legendary ‘Iolani coach and athletic director Eddie Hamada will be the topic of a talk story event hosted by the ‘Iolani Athletics Club on June 8. A panel of former players, coaches, faculty members and friends will share memories and life lessons learned by Hamada, who died in 2010. Many proposals will be on tap at HIADA

It’s possible Hawaii girls water polo will have a Division II tournament if a proposal to create one passes at the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors convention on the Big Island next week. The HIADA voting body, made up of all of the state’s high school athletic directors, will decide on whether to create an eight-team D-II state event when they meet June 5-9 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Rosario chooses Waianae over Liberty

Rico Rosario, one of the top running backs in the state, made a huge life decision last week. Saint Louis QB commits to Hawaii

In case you missed it, the Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai reported Tuesday that Saint Louis quarterback Chevan Cordeiro has committed to Hawaii. You can read the full story here. ‘Iolani’s Walden Au and Punahou’s Maika Nagata earned distinguished honors from the the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Au, who helped lead the Raiders boys to a second straight state championship, was named the organization’s head coach of the year for Hawaii. ‘Iolani’s boys had four individual state champions, eight second-place state finishers and nine state qualifiers. Gatorade honors Kailua’s Cantillo

Baseball season is over, but the accolades are piling up for Kailua scholar-athlete Joey Cantillo. The fire-balling pitcher/first baseman was selected by Gatorade as the Hawaii baseball player of the year. Cantillo, a southpaw, went 5-1 with a 1.24 ERA and a whopping 71 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings. He also batted .517 with two home runs, 23 RBIs, 12 runs scored and a slugging percentage of .700.
