Football committee meets; no action yet

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association football committee met Friday at its office on the Kaimuki High School campus to discuss the format for this fall’s state tournament, but no legislative action took place, according to HHSAA executive director Chris Chun and Oahu Interscholastic Association executive director Ray Fujino. Damien’s Padron runs to Gatorade award

Damien’s Christian Padron was named the Gatorade Hawaii track and field athlete of the year Thursday. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track. The 5-foot-9, 152-pound Padron won the 100-meter dash with a state-record time of 10.63 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 21.97 seconds at the same meet, leading the Monarchs to third place as a team. O’Handley earns Hawaii Gatorade honor

Kaiser’s Kristen O’Handley was named the Hawaii Gatorade track and field athlete of the year Thursday. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track. The 5-foot-10 senior won four individual events at the state championship meet spring, leading the Cougars to a second-place finish as a team. When the recruiting web site 247sports.com released its first recruiting rankings for the class of 2019, Saint Louis’ Faatui Tuitele, Kahuku’s Enokk Vimahi and Punahou’s Maninoa Tufono were all placed in the top 100 overall. Schools have flocked to bid for the services of all three, with the 6-foot-3, 270-pound Tuitele receiving his 17th offer on Monday from California. OIA changes to football schedule are here

The Oahu Interscholastic Association football schedule final version is out. As with any schedule, “final” version does not mean changes won’t be made in the future. All schedules are subject to change. The new version has four Wednesday games (down from six in the previous OIA draft schedule) and 15 Thursday games (down from 16). The midweek games are being played this year due to an officials shortage. It frees up the available referees to officiate more games per week. […]
