Football committee saves three tiers

Hawaii’s high school football administrators came up with a compromise to keep the three-tiered state tournament intact today. Representatives of all five leagues voted in favor of three divisions of four teams this morning at a meeting of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association football committee on the Kaimuki High campus. Cantillo makes MaxPreps national team

CBS MaxPreps picked Joey Cantillo to its 2017 All-American baseball team, the website announced Tuesday. Cantillo, a left-handed pitcher who led Kailua to its second straight Oahu Interscholastic Association championship, was one of 31 players to make the second team. Thirty-one players were picked to the first team. Cantillo, who is 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, recently signed with the San Diego Padres and received a signing bonus of $302,500 after he was selected in the 16th round.


Campbell’s Alo makes national first team

Campbell catcher Jocelyn Alo continues to reap awards. On Monday, Alo was named to the CBS MaxPreps All-American Softball first team for 2017. Alo is a two-time state player of the year and a member of the Sabers’ squad that has captured three state championships in a row. She is also a wrestling state champion. Recently, Alo was also named to the Hawaii High School Hall of Honor, arguably the most prestigious award for high school athletes in the state. […]

Kailua’s Cantillo will sign with Padres

Kailua left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo plans to play professional baseball and sign with the San Diego Padres, Hawaii Prep World learned via sources today. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound former Surfriders star will sign within the next few days. He was chosen by the Padres in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball Draft, the 468th overall pick.
