2002 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on December 5, 2017

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. 2002 was the year Bobby George, in his final chance at Saint Louis, brought home a state championship under head coach Delbert Tengan, the first since Cal Lee had left to take a year off before coaching for the Hawaiian […]

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. 1961 was a year dominated by Punahou, which saw quarterback Buzzy Joao named to the Honolulu Advertiser All-State team along with back of the year Wayne Williams. Roosevelt center Glen Shea was the lineman of the year by the Advertiser, […]

Q&A: Kamehameha two-sport standout Kalina Obrey

By Paul Honda on December 5, 2017

She is a two-sport standout who transcends the lines between “us” and “them.” Ask coaches about Kalina Obrey, particularly the ones her Kamehameha Warriors have already played in the still-early basketball season, and they rave about the 5-foot-11 junior. Of course, nobody knows her like her own coaches, like Kamehameha volleyball coach Chris Blake. (See comments by Blake and Kalani’s Chi Mok at the end of this Q&A.) The Warriors won the state volleyball title in October with Obrey as […]

Pupule ballot: Maryknoll rules, St. Francis surging

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2017

The girls basketball regular season begins this week in the ILH and OIA. ALREADY! The days of January starts are long gone. Girls basketball is ahead of the boys by two weeks, as it has been in recent seasons, to alleviate strenuous gym-time challenges at just about every high school. Interesting that there are a number of coaches, current and retired, who still bemoan the conflicts caused by having boys and girls season in the winter instead of split up […]

Kaiser’s Andrew Choi got to play in only one varsity game this season, but made the most of a second opportunity in the Life Champion Bowl on Saturday on Kauai, making two sacks to earn defensive player of the game honors. Choi had two of six sacks by Team White in a 21-14 win over Team Black. Offensive player of the game Austin Ewing of Konawaena was 6-for-9 for 85 yards and a touchdown and Kamehameha QB Thomas Yam finished […]

HAWAII GROWN: Anae, Choy lead Utah to Sweet 16

By Billy Hull on December 4, 2017

Three of the 16 teams remaining in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament feature players from Hawaii, but only one is led by them. For the first time since 2008, Utah advanced to the round of 16 with a 25-23, 25-19, 13-25, 27-25 win over Purdue on Friday in the championship game of the Salt Lake City Sub-Regional. The Utes avoided becoming one of five hosts eliminated in the first weekend of tournament play thanks to a huge game from senior […]

1985 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on December 4, 2017

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. 1985 was one of the stronger arguments against future classification, as Pac-Five won the Prep Bowl and Nanakuli was a force in the OIA West. Garrett Gabriel ran the show for the Wolfpack and Wade Thoemmes was the rock on […]
