As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016.
Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here.
1961 was a year dominated by Punahou, which saw quarterback Buzzy Joao named to the Honolulu Advertiser All-State team along with back of the year Wayne Williams.
Roosevelt center Glen Shea was the lineman of the year by the Advertiser, beating out the legendary Edward Diaz of Farrington and Kamehameha tackle Agenhart Ellis.
Punahou had a couple of impressive Walt’s on the line in guard Walt Harrington and end Walt MacFarlane. MacFarlane was also a first teamer by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, but Harrington is nowhere to be found.
Rural OIA champion Radford led the Star-Bulletin’s league all-star team with six selections, including Norm Kane at center, Mel Saunders at halfback and Walter Maze at fullback.
