1963 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on December 3, 2017

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. It’s 1963’s turn, when Farrington’s Bob Apisa and Charles Wedemeyer of Punahou were the boys to stop in the ILH and Warner Wong of Roosevelt was the big man on campus. Kamehameha had three all stars for its league title. […]

1975 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on December 2, 2017

As the 2017 Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s football All-State team release draws near, periodically we are going to ask a spreadsheet to generate a random number between 1947 and 2016. Whichever year pops up, we will post that season’s all-star pages here. We continue with 1975, the year Blane Gaison and Kamehameha ruled the roost over OIA champion Waianae. Mililani joined the OIA in the first year of Aloha Stadium, which helped the league draw 150,719 fans after getting 97,969 the previous […]

Defense carries Kamehameha over ‘Iolani for title

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2017

Moments into Kamehameha-‘Iolani, chapter 1, year 2018 A.D., the tempo was slow, the pace was like nothing seen throughout the Surfrider Holiday Classic and the Raiders seemed to have the Warriors set up perfectly for a stunning fall. Instead, Kamehameha met the challenge with maximum defense, turning a 10-all game into a 19-12 halftime lead, and went on to a 47-30 victory over ‘Iolani on Saturday night to capture the tournament title for a second year in a row. Kamren […]

Obrey powers Kamehameha in close win over HBA

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2017

Frankly, the Kamehameha Warriors weren’t interested in playing Sacred Hearts twice in a five-day period. Instead of playing the host Lancers in the final of the Orthopedic Associates Sacred Hearts Invitational, Kamehameha coach Joseph Cho opted to switch spots with Waiakea after beating the Big Islanders on Friday in the semifinals. Kamehameha played Hawaii Baptist in what amounted to a third-place matchup. The Warriors overcame the resilient Eagles in a 49-41 win on Saturday afternoon at Dorothy Macy Nobriga Gymnasium. […]

Imai, Liu spark Waiakea over Sacred Hearts for title

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2017

The Waiakea Warriors didn’t really consider this a championship game, but there they were. After losing to Kamehameha in Friday’s semifinal round of the Orthopedic Associates Sacred Hearts Invitational, Waiakea was prepared to play in Saturday’s third-place game, but there was a hitch. Kamehameha coach Joseph Cho wanted to avoid facing Sacred Hearts Academy, which ousted Hawaii Baptist in the other semifinal. Sacred Hearts (7-4 nonconference), a fellow member of ILH Division I girls basketball, plays Kamehameha on Thursday in […]

Will Milton follow Frost to Nebraska?

By Nick Abramo on December 2, 2017

There is no evidence that UCF sophomore McKenzie Milton will follow coach Scott Frost to Nebraska, but there is no evidence that he won’t. His father, Mark Milton, was asked the question via cell phone Saturday. “He has a New Year’s Day Bowl game coming up, so that (question) is something he’s not even thinking about,” said Mark Milton, who stayed in Hawaii this weekend for business reasons while others in his family attended the Knights’ 62-55, double-overtime victory over […]

HAWAII GROWN: Milton, Knights survive to win AAC title

By Billy Hull on December 2, 2017

Central Florida quarterback McKenzie Milton threw for a career-high 494 yards and accounted for six touchdowns to lead the Knights to a thrilling 62-55 win in double overtime over Memphis in the American Athletic Conference championship game today in Orlando. Milton, who threw five touchdown passes and ran for another, was named the player of the game. The 2016 Mililani alumnus has guided UCF to a perfect 12-0 record just two years after the team went 0-12 and is now […]

Defending the hill: Lunas edge Mules for 1st win

By Paul Honda on December 2, 2017

Pretty basketball is high scoring much of the time. The Lahainaluna Lunas aren’t always pretty. In fact, with a 31-30 win over Leilehua on Friday afternoon at the James Alegre Invitational, they were more than happy to embrace winning ugly — specially against a talented Mules team led by Liam Fitzgerald, who had little room to operate and managed to score 16 points. “If we shot the ball better, it would be better. We’re shooting 36 percent over the tournament,” […]
