Pupule ballot: The logic of Maryknoll’s ascent

By Paul Honda on January 26, 2018

Due to the hurricane of basketball games this week, no pun intended, this ballot hasn’t been published until now. Since the poll was released on Monday, Kapolei has gone on to claim first place in the OIA West. Also, Farrington and Moanalua meet on Saturday night with sixth place in the OIA East at stake. There are multiple tie scenarios involved. In other words, because this is the last game of the regular season, Moanalua (4-5) and Farrington (3-6) are […]

OIA East/West: 12 of 20 p4p in brackets

By Nick Abramo on January 26, 2018

Twelve of 20 wrestlers in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings will be in action Saturday in either the OIA East or the OIA West championships. Out West at Pearl City, five of 10 p4p boys and two of 10 p4p girls will go for divisional titles before next week’s league meet. In the East at Farrington, there will be one p4p boy and four p4p girls competing. Here’s a list of those 12: OIA West championships, at Pearl City Boys […]

1977 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 26, 2018

Punahou made its first appearance in the Prep Bowl in 1977, losing 27-6 to Waianae. The Seariders ended Kamehameha’s three-year run as Prep Bowl champions and won for the first time since taking the inaugural Prep Bowl in 1973. The Star-Bulletin made its first All-State team in 1977, anointing Punahou’s Mark Tuinei as its first lineman of the year winner. Tuinei edged St. Louis junior Wayne Apuna for the award, but both were unanimous selections to the All-State first team. […]

Mililani, Kaiser meet for OIA girls soccer title

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 26, 2018

Mililani’s defense helped the Trojans earn a shot at retaining the OIA Division I girls soccer title for a third straight year. Kaile Halvorsen, one of Oahu’s most dynamic scorers, helped power Kaiser into its first league championship game since 2014. The results of Thursday’s semifinal round create an intriguing matchup for the title on Saturday at Kapolei. Mililani has yet to give up a goal in three playoff matches this week and shut out previously unbeaten Pearl City in […]

Kapolei finishes OIA West slate a perfect 10-0

By Paul Honda on January 25, 2018

For three quarters, the Kapolei Hurricanes did not allow a single offensive rebound by the Campbell Sabers. In a 61-51 win tonight to seal first place in the OIA West, No. 6 Kapolei showed what can happen with a healthy lineup. The flip side of that is this: in a showdown for first place, the Sabers actually hustled and got their hands on a bunch of potential offensive rebounds. They just didn’t secure the ball until the fourth quarter, when […]

Kahuku’s Carvalho recalls 1991 Red Raiders

By Nick Abramo on January 25, 2018

Different island. Different Red Raiders. Sterling Carvalho was a key component of the Red Raiders in the early 1990s, but that was the Kauai Red Raiders. Carvalho is now the head man with a different Red Raiders altogether, the Kahuku kind. Same colors. Same nickname. Different level. Carvalho was the quarterback for the Kauai High team that earned the 1991 Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship, the first one for the school since 1978. Little did Carvalho, his teammates and Red Raiders […]

Pupule ballot: The case for St. Francis’ resume

By Paul Honda on January 25, 2018

St. Francis has talent, just enough depth, size and skill. Even with the departure of two key players during Christmas break, the Saints keep winning and are 23-0 now. In the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10, they are locked in at No. 6, the highest position for any Division II team. On my ballot, though, they are No. 2 based on a 4-0 mark against ranked teams and that incredible ledger of wins. It’s already mid-week, the OIA girls championship […]

Kaiser’s Halvorsen no longer a secret

By Billy Hull on January 25, 2018

The leading goal scorer in the OIA this season might not be a name you’re quite familiar with. But you’ll definitely want to be. Kaiser senior Kaile Halvorsen has had a knee injury take away portions of her sophomore season at Punahou and her junior year with the Cougars. She hasn’t competed in the state tournament since she was a freshman and has never appeared on the Star-Advertiser All-State first team. That might shock you when you see her play […]
