Kamehameha lets go of baseball coaches

By Billy Hull on January 27, 2018

Kamehameha has let go of all of its coaches on the varsity and junior varsity baseball teams, Hawaii Prep World has learned. The move comes with preseason tournaments beginning next month for the varsity team, which had planned a trip to California. That trip will no longer be made. Thomas Perkins, who was hired in January 2015 to replace Billy Pieper, led the Warriors to two state tournament appearances in three years. Kamehameha advanced to the state semifinals a year […]

Cooper dynasty not just about the boys

By Nick Abramo on January 27, 2018

Some wrestling families in Hawaii keep putting competitors on the mat generation after generation or year after year. The Cooper family is one of them — dad Ray Cooper was a state runner-up and his sons Raynald Cooper, Blake Cooper, Baylen Cooper and Makoa Cooper have all won state titles. And now comes the girl, who will have three more tries at a state championship of her own. Pearl City’s Makana Cooper, a sophomore, won the OIA West title in […]

Kailua’s OIA D-II title special to Afong

By Paul Honda on January 27, 2018

Malu Afong doesn’t forget easily. Just seven years ago, she and Will Kimura were co-head coaches at Kailua, which won the OIA Division II girls soccer title. Kimura passed away that year, and the success of the Surfriders — they won the D-II title in ’09, as well — meant a move to D-I. Now, back in D-II, the Surfriders are prominent once again. A 2-1 overtime win over Radford tonight gave the Surfriders their first crown since that 2010 […]

Defense is golden as Mililani makes it 3 in a row

By Paul Honda on January 27, 2018

Seven Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I championships in 10 seasons. That’s a dynasty for you, at least in the OIA. Mililani’s 2-0 win over a normally explosive Kaiser squad brought home another girls soccer title. That’s a three-peat for the Lady Trojans, who now have a first-round bye in the upcoming Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships. Mililani (12-2) did it with two impressive goals from sophomore Amber Tadeo-Gilbert and excellent defensive chemistry. Tadeo-Gilbert’s first goal was almost impossible […]

Moanalua swept the boys and girls team titles in the OIA East Division championships on Saturday at Farrington, but the battle to watch was in the girls 117-pound bracket. Roosevelt’s Macy Higa, ranked No. 9 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings, edged Kaiser’s Tiare Ikei (No. 8) by a 4-3 decision in a razor-thin final. Higa won a state title at 112 pounds as a sophomore and finished second last year. Ikei won Officials at 112 pounds last month while […]
