Boys 170 is getting even crazier

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2018

Early in this wrestling season, it was apparent that the 170-pound boys division was pretty solid. But the more coaches you talk to and the more time passes, the more you realize that this is a great group. And having so many good wrestlers in one division is rare. The biggest league, the OIA, has many top-notch boys in that class and there are sure to be others from the ILH, the MIL and the BIIF who will fight for […]

Late defense helps Kalaheo advance to OIA semis

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 2, 2018

With Kalaheo clinging to a two-point lead, Mustang junior Ryan Pardini’s first priority was to keep the ball away from Kaiser sharpshooter Hunter Dias. When Dias worked free enough to receive a pass, Pardini did the next best thing. Dias had already drained six 3-pointers, the last with 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie Friday’s OIA Division I playoff game. Kalaheo regained the lead on Andrew Kearney’s drive 8 seconds later and the Mustangs figured Kaiser would […]

By Paul Honda on February 2, 2018

Waiakea advanced. ‘Iolani did not. The final four of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships are set for tonight’s clashes at Blaisdell Center. Waiakea, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up, eked out a 55-54 come-from-behind overtime win over Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kalani on Thursday night at Moanalua gym. Waiakea is the only unseeded team to advance to the semifinals. The Warriors do not have a single senior on their roster. At McKinley, Lahainaluna survived, as well, fending off a […]

No. 4 P4P Estrella attempting to make history

By Jerry Campany on February 2, 2018

Corey Cabanban of Saint Louis might be going for history in the ILH, but what Kainalu Estrella is trying to do this weekend is even more rare. Cabanban is going for the slam in the ILH, where he will join names of fellow Crusaders like Travis Lee, Jonathan Spiker and Gerald Welch. But Estrella will be doing something that has not been done in a long, long while — win four straight MIL crowns. The accomplishment is still being researched, […]

By Jerry Campany on February 2, 2018

Nanea Estrella is on her way up. The Lahainaluna sophomore cracked the national girls high school rankings for the first time this week and jumped to the top four of Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound list. She leads a parade of athletes competing for the spot behind Teniya Alo, Kelani Corbett and Ashley Gooman, with the participants in the state’s biggest back-and-forth battle, Roosevelt’s Macy Higa and Tiare Ikei of Kaiser, coming up right behind her. State champion Jennie Fuamatu of […]
