Lahainaluna’s Estrella climbs girls P4P

Nanea Estrella is on her way up.

The Lahainaluna sophomore cracked the national girls high school rankings for the first time this week and jumped to the top four of Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound list.

She leads a parade of athletes competing for the spot behind Teniya Alo, Kelani Corbett and Ashley Gooman, with the participants in the state’s biggest back-and-forth battle, Roosevelt’s Macy Higa and Tiare Ikei of Kaiser, coming up right behind her.

State champion Jennie Fuamatu of Pearl City made the biggest drop after missing the OIA West championships but that is a reflection of the strength of girls wrestling in Hawaii more than it is a reflection on her. Although she is one of the best in Hawaii, she remains unranked nationally while eight Hawaii girls enjoy the national attention.

Kamehameha’s Paige Respicio is also unranked by Flowrestling, but don’t expect that to last long. The reigning ILH queen at 127 jumps into our rankings at No. 9 after a string of impressive wins including two over Baldwin’s Jahnei Miguel and sticking Kauanoe Keahi of Lahainaluna at Paani. That’s three wins over two state champions. With Miguel moving up to 145 and Keahi staying at 132, Respicio’s next challenge could be daunting: P4P No. 1 Teniya Alo of Kahuku competed at 138 last weekend.

The OIA will determine its champions this weekend at Leilehua while the ILH settles its team dual crowns at Iolani. The girls varsity goes Friday with the boys on Saturday. The ILH championships aren’t until next week.

The MIL championships are scheduled for Saturday at the Lahaina Civic Center, with the BIIF crowns up for grabs the same day at Kealakehe.

The state championships are on a Wednesday and Thursday this year at the Blaisdell, scheduled for Feb. 14-15.
