Alo, Corbett and Cooper go for OIA titles

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2018

Teniya Alo, Kelani Corbett and Zayren Terukina are among the bigger names going for titles at the OIA wrestling championships Friday and Saturday at Leilehua. Alo, Kahuku’s two-time state champion, is No. 1 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound girls rankings, and she is going for the league’s 138-pound title. One potential obstacle in that bracket is Waianae’s Kamakana Hernandez-Waialae, who won the OIA West on Saturday. OIA West runner-up Wynter Brown of Pearl City is another contender. Leilehua’s Corbett, No. […]

Undersized Wildcats haul in 16 offensive rebounds

By Paul Honda on February 2, 2018

The season has progressed stage by stage for the Konawaena Wildcats. On Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships, Coach Bobbie Awa knew, as always, precisely how to unlock her team’s superpowers. “We played a nice second half. We actually got some transition buckets. We should’ve been doing that all along,” said Awa, who has guided the Wildcats to eight state crowns in the past 14 seasons. That reluctance to run early may have […]

Namoa’s grit powers Lunas past young Raiders

By Paul Honda on February 2, 2018

In a game that could’ve been fitted on a raceway, the final minutes of Lahainaluna-‘Iolani instead turned into survival of the fittest. Maybe luckiest. Or most opportunistic. Third-seeded Lahainaluna’s 38-36 win over ‘Iolani in the quarterfinals of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships on Thursday night was epic, confounding and, ultimately, relief for the Lunas and heartbreak for the young Raiders. “We advanced,” longtime Lahainaluna coach Todd Rickard said. “That’s the main thing.” As expected, the matchup between Lahainaluna (21-4) […]

Kaiser and Kalani primed for soccer decider

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2018

Kalani and Kaiser are trying to do something neither school has done — win a second OIA boys soccer championship. One of them will do it Saturday at Kapolei when they face each other in the OIA final. In the semifinals on Thursday at Kapolei, Kaiser blanked Moanalua 3-0, and Kalani edged Mililani 1-0. The Cougars’ lone OIA championship came in 2014. The Falcons’ league crown was in 2016. Both of those teams, however, did not go on to win […]

Moanalua’s Sakai is far from small potatoes

By Nick Abramo on February 2, 2018

Rylan Sakai is a little person, but he is big in the minds of his Moanalua soccer team. Sakai stands 4 feet 4, well shorter than his teammates and opponents, yet he is right in the thick of things all the time on the soccer field. “Rylan is the player that shows our team how you can overcome anything,” Moanalua coach Hugo Gutierrez said after Na Menehune’s 3-0 loss to Kaiser in the OIA semifinals at Kapolei High on Thursday. […]

Hopson helps Kailua advance to OIA quarters

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 1, 2018

Kailua center Isaiah Hopson admittedly struggled during a four-game losing streak that left the Surfriders fifth in the OIA East standings entering the league playoffs. With the season on the line, the 6-foot-6 junior stepped up and stood tall indeed in Kailua’s 69-51 win over Aiea in Thursday’s opening-round elimination game in the OIA Division I boys basketball playoffs. “Tonight I wanted to redeem myself to my coach and prove that I can do better,” Hopson said after his 22-point […]

Maryknoll is rare No. 1 seed from ILH

By Billy Hull on February 1, 2018

For the first time since 2009, the No. 1 seed in the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships is a team from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Four-time defending league champion Maryknoll is the top seed as it tries to break through for its first state title since 1978. The Spartans have lost to three-time defending state champion Konawaena in the final in each of the previous two seasons. The Wildcats, who have won eight of the last 14 Division I […]

St. Francis gets top seed in D2 basketball

By Jerry Campany on February 1, 2018

ILH champion St. Francis ticked another box on its list of accomplishments. The Saints drew the top seed in the Division II portion of the HHSAA Girls Basketball state championships, the first time in the history of the program they have been seeded. St. Francis has been in the last five tournaments, but hasn’t reached the final since 2005. The Saints are followed by fellow champions KS-Hawaii (second), Roosevelt (third) and Kauai (fourth). Those teams have the benefit of waiting […]
