Molina, Aganus named most outstanding players

The Konawaena Wildcats landed three players on the all-tournament team at the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships at Blaisdell Center. Senior guard Cherilyn Molina was selected the tournament’s most outstanding player for a second year in a row as the Wildcats upset top-seeded Maryknoll 47-32 in the final. Teammates Mikayla Tablit and Caiyle Kaupu was also voted to the team. Maryknoll boys No. 1 for third week in a row

For the third week in a row, the Maryknoll Spartans are No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. The Spartans collected all 10 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. Maryknoll has earned an automatic state-tournament berth by winning the ILH regular season. They can win the league title outright with a win over No. 2 Punahou (25-3) tonight in the playoff tourney. Konawaena closes season at No. 1 in Top 10

Numbers reflect action. For nine weeks, Maryknoll was the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. Not just the team at the top, but the Lady Spartans were a unanimous No. 1 from the first poll until last week. Today, voters followed the action and Konawaena is No. 1 in the season finale, collecting all 14 first-place votes. Lahainaluna’s Kainalu Estrella completed his mission on Maui, earning the rare grand slam with a championship at the league championships on Saturday night. Estrella pinned Kamehameha-Maui’s Noa Helm in 2 minutes, 50 seconds for the historic win. No boys wrestler has won titles all four years since at least 1980.
