‘Iolani fortunate to survive PK marathon

By Nick Abramo on February 7, 2018

It was the most post-overtime penalty kicks Taylor Venenciano has seen in a soccer match, but there are those who have witnessed more than the 11 by each team in ‘Iolani’s 1-0 (9-8 PKs) state-tournament victory over Moanalua on Tuesday. The Raiders (11-3-1) finally edged Na Menehune (10-3-1) when Venenciano sealed it with a goal on the 22nd PK. Moanalua coach Nikki Dela Pena remembers a game in which there were 23 kicks by each side, and ‘Iolani coach Kristin […]

Roosevelt’s Ahia has 1 more chance at states

By Christian Shimabuku on February 6, 2018

Roosevelt senior Joseph Ahia has been one of the most accomplished swimmers in the OIA after breaking and setting records for three straight years. In case you missed it, he was the featured prep athlete in Tuesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Ahia seems to outdo himself year after year. Now, as a senior, this is his last chance to improve on his times yet again. “It’s hard, but seeing improvements in your times makes it worth it and feel that you can […]

Q&A: Sacred Hearts girls soccer coach Glenn Arakawa

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2018

The Lancers have been close before. Last year, the girls soccer team from the Academy of the Sacred Hearts were also the broken hearts. An opening-round 4-1 win over Waianae at the state tournament was followed by a 3-2 loss to No. 1 seed Hawaii Prep. The BIIF champions went to capture their fourth-straight state title. It was the first appearance in the state tourney for the Lancers since 2008, when they lost in overtime to Campbell, 2-1. Then they […]

Punahou, Kalani top 2 seeds in boys soccer

By Billy Hull on February 6, 2018

ILH champion Punahou and OIA champion Kalani are the top two seeds in the Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships beginning Monday. The Buffanblu finished 11-1 and gave up six goals in 12 ILH regular-season games. Punahou has won the last two state titles, including last year when it won as an unseeded team. Kalani is 12-0-1 entering the tournament after sweeping through the OIA playoffs, winning all three games by an identical 1-0 score. The Falcons have given […]

No. 4 Kahuku overcomes McKinley’s box-and-1

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2018

Kahuku advanced to the OIA championship game with a 56-40 win over McKinley on Monday night, but it was more than just a solid win for Kahuku. It was about patience. Dealing with walkers instead of runners. Kahuku (24-3 overall) could have tried more to speed the game up, but opted not to press fullcourt. They do more than enough, really, out of a rugged man-to-man defense. But the Tigers were not quite accommodating. Plan A worked to near perfection […]

Despite adversity, Kalaheo upsets No. 5 Kapolei

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2018

All signs pointed to more Hurricane onslaught in the OIA. The Kapolei Hurricanes were healthy. Developing a now-rarely seen 3-2 matchup zone with 6-foot-4 Zoar Nedd at the top. Scoring and rebounding — and blocked shots – in good supply. They had no idea the Kalaheo Mustangs would match them play for play, and then some. In a stunning 56-53 semifinal win on Monday night, the Mustangs overcame every bit of adversity to advance to the championship game. Kalaheo (19-11 […]

ILH title comes down to winner-take-all final

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2018

On the hardwood, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu is treacherous place to be. Sleep for one minute and the natural hierarchy activates. The food chain is always at risk of shuffling. Victors reap the gold while those who nap are bumped aside. It is a perpetual state of chasing that flag at the top of the mountain even as your team takes every mental and physical wound imaginable. Maryknoll (25-5 overall) did just that, capturing the ILH regular-season title last […]

VIDEO: No. 1 Maryknoll vs. No. 2 Konawaena

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2018

The battle in the trenches turned into a test of wills. Konawaena trailed at the half, 22-17, then got a layup from Cherilyn Molina and a corner 3 by Caiyle Kaupu to tie the game at 22. From there, the second-seeded Wildcats took control of the tempo and upset top-seeded Maryknoll, making it four consecutive state titles for Konawaena and nine crowns in the past 15 years under Coach Bobbie Awa.
