HPA’s Perry sad to see these 2 fly the nest

By Nick Abramo on February 11, 2018

Hawaii Prep soccer coach Steve Perry takes special pride in treating his team as a completely different unit than the version of the squad he coached the year before. That thinking helps alleviate the feeling of, “Well, we were good last year so we’ll automatically be good again this year.” So, in Perry’s mind, instead of one large blur of Ka Makani success in the form of five straight Division II state championships, he can break it down into increments […]

By Jerry Campany on February 11, 2018

The Hawaii Prep World girls pound-for-pound rankings remains largely unchanged after league championships, with Kahuku’s Tangiteina Niutupuivaha jumping into the fray in the place of Tianna Fernandez of Baldwin. Fernandez went for it at the MIL but came up short against Ira Navarro. No matter, Niutupuivaha has dominated the heavyweight class with Lavenia Fotu of Farrington out of the picture. Big matches loom at states with No. 3 Ashley Gooman of Kamehameha and No. 6 Tiare Ikei of Kaiser lined […]

State titlist ‘Iolani was on brink of elimination

By Nick Abramo on February 10, 2018

Fullback Kelsey Wong will always remember the nerve-racking feeling she had Jan. 29. That’s when her ‘Iolani Raiders faced elimination even though they weren’t playing a match that day. Across town, at Kamehemameha, if the host Warriors lost to Punahou, it would have spelled doom for the Raiders, taking them out of state-tournament consideration. Luckily, for ‘Iolani, the Warriors won that game. It left the door open for the Raiders, who eventually muscled all the way through to their second […]
