By Nick Abramo on February 13, 2018

Set your calendars for a big show. On Aug. 31, Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas will visit Honolulu to play two-time defending state champion Saint Louis at Aloha Stadium, according to Crusaders coach Cal Lee. Lee worked out the details of the contest with Chris Brown, the former All-WAC performer for the University of Hawaii who is now an assistant with the Gaels. Under coach Kenny Sanchez, Bishop Gorman won national high school championships in 2015 and 2016. The Gaels […]

When Interscholastic League of Honolulu athletic directors voted unanimously in the affirmative Monday, it put the finishing touches on a historic football agreement with the Oahu Interscholastic Association. For 2018 and 2019 under a two-year pilot program, the OIA and ILH will play a full slate of interleague, nonleague, regular-season games, according to sources from both leagues. The agreement caps more than a month of negotiations and hard work by the brass of the two leagues. It was done to […]

Q&A: Kalani and HSDB hoopster Brandon Chung

By Paul Honda on February 13, 2018

Brandon Chung approaches life with full gusto. That in itself doesn’t make him unique. His deafness does that just fine. He was 2 when a high fever led to a permanent loss of hearing, at least until he got older and underwent cochlear implant surgery. This allows him to hear quite clearly with his left ear. What makes Chung, a sophomore at the Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind, special is that he has become a clutch contributor at […]

Kalaheo enters state tournament at No. 5

By Paul Honda on February 13, 2018

This makes it four weeks in a row at No. 1 for the Maryknoll Spartans. The Spartans lost to No. 2 Punahou, then beat the Buffanblu for the ILH championship last week to remain at No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 released Monday. This is the third time Maryknoll (26-6) is a unanimous pick by the panel of coaches and media. Punahou (25-3) and St. Francis (26-3) followed, remaining the same slots they were in last week. […]

Kapolei bounces back to beat Kaiser to start states

By Billy Hull on February 12, 2018

With 10 returning seniors from a team that won an OIA championship last season and has made the final four of the state tournament the last two years, Kapolei had no business finishing in sixth place in the OIA boys soccer playoffs. But that’s exactly where the Hurricanes ended up after finishing second in the OIA West in the regular season. A stunning 1-0 loss to Moanalua in the quarterfinals and a 2-1 defeat against Pearl City in the fifth-place […]

Punahou’s “212 Effect” wears down McKinley

By Paul Honda on February 12, 2018

Then, and now, the Punahou Buffanblu refer to it as the 212 Effect. Screened onto their warmup shirts last season, 212 is the temperature at which water boils. It is also what the Buffanblu refer to when their fullcourt pressure, whether by man-to-man coverage or zone presses, starts to wear an opponent down. That was the cumulative effect on Monday night against McKinley in a 59-39 win in the opening round of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships at Hemmeter […]

2013 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on February 12, 2018

After losing to Kahuku in the 2012 state final, the Buffanblu began what eventually turned out to be a 19-game winning streak with a perfect 11-0 season and a state title in 2013. Quarterback Larry Tuileta capped a fine season with two of his best performances, throwing for 430 yards in a state semifinal win over Farrington and three touchdowns in the final against Mililani to seal his offensive player of the year award. Tuileta beat coach of the year […]
