Punahou turns up heat to sweep ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on March 6, 2018

On paper, maybe Jordan Inafuku has one advantage. The ‘Iolani boys volleyball coach knows many of Punahou’s standout players quite well. At least the ones who play for Spike N’ Serve Volleyball Club, which Inafuku coaches. The reality, though, is that when Punahou plays any team, even a powerhouse like ‘Iolani, they are a big blue machine. Ryan Wilcox didn’t get a surplus of opportunities, yet had eight kills. Wilcox’s presence opened up the other side for Kana‘i Akana, who […]

Q&A: Campbell pitcher Jamin Kalaola

By Paul Honda on March 6, 2018

It’s the kind of opening statement that any pitcher would love to have. In Campbell’s OIA West opener against powerhouse Mililani last week, senior Jamin Kalaola fired a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts and no walks. It was less than perfect in his eyes, but the Sabers will gladly take that kind of performance every time. Longtime coach Rory Pico is always about team, but praised Kalaola for his excellence and work ethic in the classroom and athletics. “His overall […]

By Nick Abramo on March 5, 2018

Most ILH football coaches believe the league will count its regular-season games against OIA teams in determining ILH champions and state berths. No official decision has been made by the ILH office. Late last month, the OIA and ILH put the finishing touches on a historic deal that brings the leagues together for a full slate of interleague games. When the agreement was officially announced, it was clear that the OIA would not count interleague games against the ILH in […]

Calvary Chapel’s mystery guard named MVP at Robinson Classic

By Paul Honda on March 3, 2018

For years, Talia Brandner played with her 808 Basketball Club teammates, another budding hoopster star in the making. Unlike her club teammates, she didn’t play in the ILH or OIA. She wound up attending high school at Calvary Chapel. In fact, she was virtually out of the spotlight, playing against opponents like Koolau Baptist, Trinity Christian and Friendship Christian. When she was selected to play on the ILH squad in the Geremy Robinson Senior Classic, Brandner was stunned. “I was […]
