Hirano gives Pearl City a win over Campbell in 12

By Paul Honda on March 7, 2018

It would be easy to believe that desperate measures lead to greater urgency — and success. Or maybe baseball is just a game of pain. Down 1-0 against one of the OIA West’s top pitchers — Campbell’s Jamin Kalaola — the Pearl City Chargers didn’t gain any momentum against the fourth-ranked Sabers, especially on Campbell’s home field. Their first 11 batters failed to get on base. Kalaola turned in another masterful performance: one run on three hits, three strikeouts with […]

Tachibana walks away from Kahuku job

By Nick Abramo on March 6, 2018

Mounia Tachibana is unhappy with what she calls a lack of support she and her team received from the Kahuku administration and has left her job as the Red Raiders girls volleyball coach. “I did not have support from the administration,” she said Tuesday. “The Kahuku athletes deserve better. The administration is more involved with football and that makes it really hard for the other sports to progress.” Phone calls to Kahuku principal Donna Lindsey and athletic director Gillian Yamagata […]

Holes in No. 1 Leilehua’s game hard to find

By Nick Abramo on March 6, 2018

There’s little doubt that things are going to get tougher for the Leilehua softball team. After winning the first three games of the OIA West by scores of 16-5, 12-2 and 9-3, how can they not? The Mules are ranked No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 and with good reason. Finding reasons why they shouldn’t be ranked there is mighty tough. Leilehua (3-0) is stacked at the plate and in the field, even though they made four errors […]

Defense lifts No. 2 Owls over No. 1 ‘Iolani

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 6, 2018

There’s no denying the high of delivering a timely hit. Going airborne for a catch to deny a threat? Well, that sensation comes awfully close … if not better. “It feels amazing. It feels like nothing else,” Mid-Pacific outfielder Jet Uechi said Tuesday. Uechi would know after making a diving snag with the bases loaded in the first inning of the second-ranked Owls’ ILH duel with No. 1 ‘Iolani at the Raiders’ field. MPI right fielder Micah Pi experienced much the […]

Punahou limits its mistakes in win over Saint Louis

By Billy Hull on March 6, 2018

With four sophomores in its starting lineup and pitching ace Kahi Bisho not scheduled to pitch on Tuesday, No. 7 Punahou went out anyway and played like the more polished team in a 5-1 victory over No. 5 Saint Louis in an ILH baseball game at Goeas Field. Second baseman Kalae Harrison, one of those sophomores for the Buffanblu (2-1), ripped two line-drive doubles to right-center and scored twice to lead the Punahou offense. Saint Louis (1-2) made three errors […]
