By Hawaii Prep World on March 31, 2018

All ILH baseball games scheduled for Saturday have been postponed. ILH softball games between Kamehameha and host ‘Iolani and Punahou and St. Francis at Ala Wai Field scheduled for 2 p.m. have also been rained out. The ILH just recently rescheduled […]

By Jerry Campany on March 30, 2018

ILH champion Farrington dominated the top awards in 1965 with quarterback Stanley Cadiente named back of the year and center Ambrose Costa winning lineman of the year honors from both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin. McKinley halfback John Coen was the only junior named to the first team by the Advertiser after setting an ILH record with 109 points in a season. The Bulletin had three juniors on their squad with tackles Richard Lolotai of ‘Iolani and Clarence Dias […]

No. 4 Campbell finishes off impressive week

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2018

In the wickedly dangerous OIA West, having an ace pitcher is nice. It is often not enough. Having two good hurlers is even better, but as this week has shown, in the West it’s a good hand. It’s nice. Campbell has a three-man pitching rotation, matched by few teams statewide, and the result is a six-game win streak, including three wins in five days this week. The Sabers, with a surprisingly easy 10-0 win over second-place Pearl City on Friday […]

1957 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on March 30, 2018

Undefeated ILH champion Roosevelt finished with more than half of the players selected to the ILH football all-star first team chosen by the Honolulu Advertiser in 1957. Roosevelt halfback Milton Kam was the only repeat selection and Punahou junior tackle Lindsey Kinney and fullback Ben Samson were the only underclassmen to make the team. The Rough Riders dominated the line with four unanimous selections — end Joe Meyer, tackle Faatautau Salanoa, guard Francois Wallace and center Tom Price. Wallace was named […]

Yoshino, Young are clutch for MPI under the lights

By Billy Hull on March 29, 2018

No. 2 Mid-Pacific waited nine long days to play a game like this one. Jacob Yoshino singled home Wyatt Young, who tripled with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth inning, to give the second-ranked Owls a 5-4 win over No. 4 Punahou to cap a memorable ILH doubleheader on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium. Earlier, Kamehameha’s Li’i Pontes tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts in a 4-3 win over Saint Louis. Playing their […]

OIA West wide open as Kapolei beats No. 1 Campbell

By Christian Shimabuku on March 29, 2018

The parity that exists at the top of the OIA West just got even more condensed after No. 4 Kapolei’s 11-3 home victory over No. 1 Campbell on Thursday. The Sabers (5-2) led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third innings, but the Hurricanes (5-3) exploded for eight runs to break the game open. Kapolei was lifted by the stellar pitching performance of Cira Bartolotti, a recent University of Hawaii commit. The junior didn’t give up any runs after […]

Kamehameha’s Pontes at full strength

By Billy Hull on March 29, 2018

Regardless of pitch count, Kamehameha right-hander Li’i Pontes was facing his final batter. With the tying run at second and two outs, Pontes, a University of Hawaii signee, finished off a three-hit complete game victory getting Cole Kashimoto to ground out to third to end a 4-3 win over Saint Louis on Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium. Pontes struck out nine and threw 108 pitches, impressing first-year head coach Kahi Ka’anoi in the process. “He’s a smart pitcher who has […]

1988 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on March 29, 2018

Saint Louis wide receiver Micah Matsuzaki led the way in 1988 as the offensive player of the year by both newspapers. Matsuzaki scored 11 touchdowns in 1988, including three on punt returns. The Honolulu Advertiser named Saint Louis linebacker Kendall Purcell as its defensive player of the year. The Star-Bulletin came up with an interesting note on its All-Oahu team. Three players — defensive backs Sean Spencer of Kamehameha and Robert Pagan of Saint Louis, along with Kailua running back Byron […]
