Seariders stun Rams, share OIA West lead

By Paul Honda on April 2, 2018

So the OIA West is being owned in large part by a team that hasn’t won the league’s Division I title since 2008 — Waianae — and a Radford squad that was in D-II just one year ago. Click here for OIA West volleyball standings/schedule. Radford had sole possession of the West lead until Monday night, when Waianae rolled in and toppled the previously unbeaten Rams 25-19, 21-25, 15-9. The Rams and Seariders now share first place in the West […]

1952 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on April 2, 2018

The Honolulu Advertiser ILH all-star team in 1952 featured three players who made it on both offense and defense — Punahou’s Donn Carswell, Roosevelt’s Henry George and Kamehameha’s Dan Fuller. Carswell and George were the only repeat selections form the previous season. ILH champion Kamehameha led the way with seven selections, including defensive end Alex Kane. Kane made it on both offense and defense for the Honoulu Star-Bulletin, which selected nine Warriors to its first team. ILH runner-up Punahou got six […]

OIA West takes over top 3 spots in softball

By Paul Honda on April 2, 2018

The chaos in the standings of prep softball in the ILH and OIA lead to one result: confusion. In fact, one voter in this week’s Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 simply responded: “I don’t know how to sort this out. Please repeat my ballot from last week.” The coach wasn’t alone, coaches and media are perplexed by the incredible parity this season. The growing number of quality teams — so many good ones who don’t crack the Top 10 or even […]

Mid-Pacific, Baldwin tied for top spot

By Billy Hull on April 2, 2018

For three consecutive weeks, just two votes separated Baldwin and Mid-Pacific at the top of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. This week, that number is zero. The undefeated Bears (6-0) and ILH-leading Owls (7-1) are tied at No. 1 despite receiving a different number of first-place votes. Baldwin, which is ranked No. 21 in the country by USA Today, received seven of the 10 first-place votes but oddly enough, did not receive a second-place vote. On the three ballots […]

Behind scenes, Takara left a lasting legacy

By Nick Abramo on April 2, 2018

If the name Yasuo Takara doesn’t ring a bell, it’s because — as his daughter Melanie so aptly describes — he was “a man behind the scenes.” But the name Yasuo Takara — who died Feb. 2 at age 85 — will always ring a bell for many in the Hawaii sports world. Professionally, he was an educator — classroom teacher, football coach, athletic director — but his passion was working to make a better life for those around him […]

Moanalua still owns East — for now

By Brian McInnis on April 1, 2018

Moanalua did what it had to do to retain supremacy in the OIA East boys volleyball standings last week. Na Menehune won at Kaiser, 26-24, 25-22, Thursday in a battle of 7-0 teams to take the inside track to the East’s top seed in the upcoming league playoffs. Moanalua, now at 8-0, leads Kaiser and Farrington (7-1 each) by a game with three contests remaining in the regular season. Click here for OIA East standings/schedule. It was a familiar outcome […]

Trip to Seattle prepared Radford for the rain

By Nick Abramo on March 31, 2018

Radford thought the bad weather was all in the past, but at least the Rams were ready for Saturday’s drizzly baseball game against rival Farrington. The Rams visited the Seattle area last week to play two games against local high school teams and got a taste of the springtime weather in the Pacific Northwest. “It was the exact same weather,” said Radford coach Jacob Sur, referring to the rain that never stopped during the Rams’ 6-3 home victory over the […]
