The ILH baseball season finally came to an end on Friday with ‘Iolani defeating Punahou 11-5 at Hans L’Orange Park. The game originally started a week ago but was halted in the bottom of the second inning with the Raiders ahead 7-2. Micah Miyahira‘s three-run triple helped ‘Iolani pull away to finish the ILH season at 11-3-1, a half-game ahead of Punahou 11-4. ILH champion Kamehameha and runner-up Roosevelt led the way with four selections each on the Honolulu Advertiser’s ILH all-star teams in 1951. There were no unanimous selections to the team, but Rooosevelt halfback Roy Ryder, the league scoring champion, gaining seven of the eight first-place ballots. After Punahou’s 25-17, 25-22, 25-11 sweep of ‘Iolani at Mid-Pacific’s Mills gym on Thursday night, the Buffanblu (13-0) clinched their 15th straight ILH title and remain undefeated for the season, having lost only one set the entire year. The stunned reaction before a boisterous home crowd at Waianae was almost eerie. There was no doubt, however, that the Kapolei Hurricanes were the superior team on this night. Sam Prentice called it “redemption.” Just over a year ago, a loss to Moanalua in the consolation semifinals ended the Chargers’ season in the OIA playoffs. Oklahoma freshman Jocelyn Alo, a two-time Gatorade Hawaii state player of the year while at Campbell, is one of 25 candidates for the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award, the NFCA announced today. Alo leads the Big 12 with 19 homers, 60 RBIs and a 1.009 slugging percentage. Nationally, Alo ranks second in homers, third in slugging, fifth in RBIs and sixth in total bases with 113.
