St. Francis completes ILH mission

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 17, 2018

St. Francis wanted to prove it could compete with the best in ILH softball, regardless of division designation. Consider that box checked with a big blue Sharpie. The seventh-ranked Saints pulled out a 6-5 walk-off win over No. 5 Maryknoll on Tuesday to clinch at least a tie for the best record in the ILH’s first round. St. Francis, one of just two ILH Division II teams, closed the combined schedule at 9-3 and won both of its meetings with […]

No. 1 and No. 2 finish tied in OIA West

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2018

The offseason road from Maryknoll to Leilehua was unexpected, but satisfying for Kamryn Kamakaiwi. The fire-balling southpaw came through in a big way on Wednesday, firing a two-hit shutout in Leilehua’s 11-0, five-inning win over No. 10 Mililani. That gave Leilehua a 9-3 mark and a share of the OIA West softball regular-season title. The Mules enter the playoffs ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 while being second, according to the league tiebreakers and seedings, in the […]

Q&A: Punahou tennis champ Katreina Corpuz

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2018

Katreina Corpuz has dedicated her life to tennis, but she’s willing to forego a professional career. The defending HHSAA girls state champion loves watching Kill Bill movies with her dad, Reinaldo, but doesn’t consider herself martial arts material. As a junior, Corpuz helped Punahou capture the team championship in 2017, the program’s 15th in a row. The ILH finals approach on Wednesday, with the state tourney around the corner. Corpuz has never been a No. 1 seed, but that’s likely […]

By Billy Hull on April 17, 2018

After winning just 10 games without a single player from Hawaii on its roster last season, William Jessup decided to recruit the islands hard. The NAIA baseball program based in California added six players with Hawaii ties to its roster this season and was rewarded with its first-ever Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season championship. The Warriors completed a series sweep of Arizona Christian on Saturday to clinch the title with their 34th win overall. “I can’t put into words how […]

Leilehua softball takes it to Pearl City

By Brian McInnis on April 16, 2018

It was all sunshine for Leilehua softball on Monday. Career days from two players — senior pitcher Kaena Nistal and shortstop Jacelyn “Lovey” Kepa‘a — carried the No. 2 Mules to a 12-0 five-inning rout of No. 9 Pearl City at the Chargers’ field. The game was made up from a rainout. All considered, it was an impressive showing from Leilehua (8-3), which suffered a 6-5 comeback defeat to its top-ranked rival, Campbell (9-3), last week. Now the Mules play […]

Nothing is settled in ILH baseball

By Billy Hull on April 16, 2018

While Damien coach Timo Donahue met with his team after a 9-5 loss to No. 5 ‘Iolani on Monday at Goeas Field, many of his assistant coaches were gathered around a cell phone. They were checking in on St. Francis’ game against Pac-Five that was tied 9-9 in the seventh inning at Ala Wai Field. A St. Francis win would mean Damien would need to beat the Saints four times over the next two weeks to win the ILH and […]

Lady Sabers return to top spot

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2018

After one week at the top of the totem pole, the Kapolei Hurricanes have been bumped off. Three-time defending state champion Campbell has usurped the throne in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 released today. The Sabers opened the season at No. 1 and are now at the coveted position for a fourth time in a dizzying storm of a season in prep softball.
