Mililani town celebrates OIA baseball title

By Nick Abramo on April 22, 2018

Mililani lit fireworks at the high school Saturday night for its 50th birthday celebration. And the Trojans baseball team made its own fireworks at Les Murakami Stadium by nipping Kailua 5-4 to win its first OIA title since 1997. That last championship 21 years ago was under coach Glenn Nitta, who has been with the school since it opened in 1973 — five years after the inception of the town. “It’s special with all the competition we face in the […]

OIA champion Farrington makes history

By Christian Shimabuku on April 21, 2018

In order for Farrington’s baseball team to make history on Saturday, it first had to defy it. For starters, there was recent history. The Governors were going up against a Radford team that had beaten them twice earlier in the season. To make circumstances more challenging, the Rams trotted out ace Jack Dillon to start the game, who tossed a no-hitter against Farrington last year. With the odds stacked against them, the Governors prevailed 6-4 to give the school its […]

OIA crowns its tennis champions

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2018

There is perhaps no one who trained and prepared like Andre Ilagan to make a dream come true. By the spring of 2017, the Farrington junior overcame all adversity, becoming the first Oahu Interscholastic Association boys tennis player to win an HHSAA state title since Jared Spiker of Kalani (2009 and ’10). Ilagan also became the first-ever state tennis champ from Farrington. With that kind of achievement, he became more than a crown prince of Kalihi tennis. He became a […]

Kahuku still reigns supreme

By Brian McInnis on April 21, 2018

The only thing that’s changed for Kahuku in OIA girls water polo is the Red Raiders’ head coach. When it comes to winning league water polo titles, the North Shore is as dominant as ever. Kahuku answered its most meaningful challenge in years in convincing fashion, besting Kaiser 9-6 on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park. It was the Raiders’ ninth straight OIA title, and 15th in 16 years since official competition began. Just a couple of weeks ago, Kaiser […]

Taulia announced his commitment Saturday to CBS 42’s Simone Eli, who posted this video on Twitter. #BREAKING: Thompson HS quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa (@tauliaa12), younger brother of #Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, has committed to play for the Tide! #RollTide @WARRIORNATION20 @coachmarkf @Tuaamann_ @AL7AFootball @AndrewJBone @TideSports #ALpreps pic.twitter.com/VIRV3FLNub — Simone Eli (@SimoneEli_TV) April 21, 2018 Alabama […]

Mililani on cusp of substantial breakthrough

By Nick Abramo on April 21, 2018

Mililani is always in the postseason, but the Trojans don’t have a lot of hardware to show for it. That could change Saturday night in the OIA baseball championship game against Kailua. Mililani earned the right to be there with a 6-5 roller-coaster victory over Campbell on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium. A quick check at the record book shows that the Trojans’ last OIA championship came in 1997 under Glenn Nitta, the current Mililani athletic director who has […]

Punahou keeps ILH water polo streak going

By Brian McInnis on April 20, 2018

When Punahou’s streak of Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls water polo titles began, Christina Hicks was 4, with no concept whatsoever of throwing a ball into a net while treading water. On Friday, Hicks helped the Buffanblu emphatically pick up an 11th straight league crown, 9-1 against host Kamehameha. “I didn’t even know what water polo was until I was about 12 years old,” said Hicks, who had three of her team’s scores. “I started playing water polo in seventh […]

Kailua a win away from 15th OIA crown

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2018

Kailua’s Bryson Ballesteros tossed a one-hit shutout and Kailua is a win away from its third consecutive OIA title and 15th overall following a 1-0 win over Pearl City on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The Surfriders (12-2) scored their only run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Kalua Neves led off with a single to right, and courtesy runner Brandon Sarae went to second on Dylan Kurahashi Choy-Foo’s bunt single. Stone Parker then laid down a […]
