MPI closes in on ILH title with walk-off win

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2018

The wind was wicked and unkind, but neither the Owls nor the Raiders would succumb often. There were dazzling, whirling catches by the visiting ‘Iolani Raiders on a rainy afternoon. Swirling winds made life difficult on routine pop flies. By the end, regular-season winner Mid-Pacific edged ‘Iolani 7-6 on a game-winning sacrifice fly by Jet Uechi, and the dream flourishes for the Owls. They are now the only remaining unbeaten team in the ILH baseball double-elimination tournament. For a long […]

Hawaii Baptist’s Kelsey Ota was the runner-up at 155 after a second-round 76. “Yeah, I was really lucky today, had a lot of good bounces,” Kilby said. “I didn’t feel like I was playing too […]

By Nick Abramo on April 24, 2018

Punahou’s Remington Hirano shot a 2-under 70 to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu golf championship Wednesday at the Turtle Bay Fazio Course. Hirano finished the two-round tournament at 2-under 142, four shots clear of Buffanblu teammate Kane Rogers, who closed with a 71. A senior, Hirano had his coach of 11 years, the late Lance Suzuki, on his mind throughout Wednesday’s round. “My coach, Lance Suzuki, passed away last summer, and it was hard to stay focused knowing that. […]

Matsushita throws a 55-pitch complete game for MPI

By Christian Shimabuku on April 24, 2018

Showing that it’s not content with an ILH regular season title and the comfort of an automatic state berth, Mid-Pacific rode the arm of Shion Matsushita to a 3-1 first round victory over Saint Louis on Monday at Damon Field. The Owls’ ace pitched a complete game gem and only needed an astounding 55 pitches to get the job done. He was also buoyed by an impeccable defense led by shortstop Wyatt Young, who often made challenging plays look routine. […]

Kaiser will ‘fight for first banner’ against Moanalua

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2018

After all these years, Kaiser volleyball coach Jon Stanley Sr. could easily be a bit jaded and crusty. The Cougars overwhelmed the Kapolei Hurricanes in four sets on Monday night, ending the Cinderella dreams of the team that knocked out West leader Waianae last week. Now Kaiser (12-1) has only one obstacle standing in the way of a first OIA championship: unbeaten, six-time defending league champion Moanalua. Stanley, soft spoken and measured, simply can’t get enough of the work his […]

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2018

For a second week in a row, the Campbell Sabers are the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10. Today’s balloting revealed status quo for the top four softball teams from last week’s poll, the first time all season those positions were static. Campbell (16-5-2, 9-3 OIA West) collected six of 11 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. Leilehua (12-4, 9-3) finished in a first-place tie with Campbell in the OIA West, but garnered just […]

Kahuku’s Schwenke dies at 25

By Nick Abramo on April 24, 2018

Former Kahuku football coach Reggie Torres was shaken when he heard the news of the death of Kona Schwenke, one of three defensive linemen from the 2009 Red Raiders squad that lost 34-21 in the state Division I football final to Kamehameha. Schwenke, 25, was found dead in his sleep by his family Sunday morning, according to his father, McKay Schwenke. Kona went on to play a four-year career at Notre Dame. No cause of death is known at this […]

OIA softball playoffs begin Wednesday

By Billy Hull on April 22, 2018

The West No. 1 seed Campbell Sabers enter the OIA tournament as the three-time defending state champions. However, the Sabers haven’t won an OIA title since 2013. Mililani, which has won three of the last four OIA Division I softball titles, is the defending champion and opens the tournament Wednesday in a must-win game at Kailua to keep its season alive. Defending OIA Division II champion Aiea is the No. 3 seed this year behind Kalani and Waialua. McKinley will […]
