Q&A: Hilo’s Micah Bello MLB draft workout tour

By Paul Honda on June 4, 2018

En route from Anaheim to Los Angeles, Micah Bello and family were in the midst of an amazing adventure. Bello, the recent Hilo High graduate, was on the continent traveling from one pre-draft workout to another. It’s no surprise. The lanky, powerful outfielder led everyone at his position in the Star-Advertiser All-State voting by coaches and media. That’s a bit of a surprise considering the Vikings lost a play-in game prior to the state tourney and never set foot on […]

By Paul Honda on June 3, 2018

When the stars line up at Baldwin, it’s happy time. It’s also, at least in two of the last three seasons, time for a state championship. In this age of specialization, the senior not only offered pristine defense in center field, he was perfect on the mound with a 0.00 ERA during Maui Interscholastic League play. Then came a clutch performance at the Wally […]

By Jerry Campany on June 2, 2018

The last of our all-stars of the past brings us to the present, with the 2018 edition being released in Sunday’s Star-Advertiser. Parity reigns after the death of Eric Kadooka‘s Punahou dynasty, with only Baldwin winning multiple state championships in Division I but Division II had a small dynasty of its own with Maryknoll taking three in a row. A little off topic, but here is a really good story about Mid-Pacific shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa: Sportsday on Kiner-Falefa Doubleclick the […]

Baseball all stars, 1980-89

By Jerry Campany on May 31, 2018

Ed Allen‘s Kamehameha crew started the decade off with a state title and ended it with two more, including a 1-0 win in 1987 to deny Iolani its third title. The OIA didn’t have much success but might have had the best battery of the decade with Kaiser’s Sid Fernandez and Keith Komeiji willing their Cougars to an OIA East title early in the decade and a state title in 1981. Familiar names to look for include Joey Meyer of […]
