Pass-happy Kahuku shows up at Waipahu

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2018

Wesley Alo-Maiava had a spectacular first play Friday. The Kahuku running back took it to the house — an 80-yard run — on the first play of the Red Raiders’ scrimmage against Waipahu. After finding the end zone, he immediately lifted his hands toward the Waipahu bench and gave a wave. “That was to all the Waipahu kids,” Alo-Maiava said. “Let them know we’re here.” It was not a show of cockiness as much as it was a release of […]

PREPPING for 2018: Campbell Sabers

By Nick Abramo on July 26, 2018

10TH IN A SERIES Campbell football coach Darren Johnson said two striking things in a recent interview. 1. “The new OIA-ILH alliance’s Open Division might be the toughest league in America.” 2. Campbell has “zero players on academic probation for the second year in a row.” The first one is possible, but hard to prove. The second one is an great accomplishment. “It’s a tribute to our whole school,” said Johnson, who is starting his second season as the Sabers’ […]

Saint Louis’ Mose, Moanalua’s Alualu mix it up in scrimmage

By Nick Abramo on July 26, 2018

Two friends and former teammates met on the Saint Louis School field Thursday during the Crusaders’ football scrimmage against Moanalua. Guard Arasi Mose of Saint Louis and defensive tackle Tupu Alualu of Na Menehune had a blast exploding on each other on the line. Finally, they got to hit real opponents instead of the teammates they’ve been competing against all summer. “Going up against one of the top lines in the state was a good experience for me,” said Alualu, […]

PREPPING for 2018: Kaiser Cougars

By Nick Abramo on July 26, 2018

NINTH IN A SERIES Tim Seaman is the man being counted on to help Kaiser rise again. The Cougars hit rock bottom last year, forfeiting all but one of their games due to friction between parents and then-head coach Arnold Martinez and a lack of varsity players suiting up. It was pretty much a lost season. Seaman is not new to the head coaching circuit. He was head coach at Kaiser and McKinley in the 1990s. He’s got a good […]

PREPPING for 2018: Nanakuli Golden Hawks

By Nick Abramo on July 25, 2018

EIGHTH IN A SERIES It was a down year for Nanakuli last season as far as wins and losses go — 1-7 and no playoffs. But that did little to diminish the positive outlook by the coaches for 2018 or dent what always is the endless flow of support from the tight-knit town. One big positive for the Golden Hawks is that the participation numbers have gone up this summer, according to coach Kili Watson. “I would describe this team […]

PREPPING for 2018: Aiea Na Alii

By Nick Abramo on July 25, 2018

SEVENTH IN A SERIES Aiea football coach Wendell Say doesn’t care who Na Alii’s opponents are. “Bring ’em on” has always been his mantra. Yet, he’s definitely not shedding tears that he won’t be going up against any of those Open Division teams that are part of the top tier of the new OIA-ILH alliance. Aiea is now in the second tier of competition — Division I. “We like the breakup of the divisions now,” he said. “We don’t play […]

By Billy Hull on July 24, 2018

Saint Louis defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele and Punahou linebacker Maninoa Tufono were named to MaxPreps’ preseason All-American second team today. Tuitele is listed at 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds by MaxPreps entering the season. The Crusaders, ranked No. 12 in the first MaxPreps rankings, also made the website’s list of top 10 games in 2018. An Aug. 17 meeting at Aloha Stadium against Narbonne (Calif.) at Aloha Stadium in a rematch of last year’s 56-50 shootout win by the Crusaders was […]
