PREPPING for 2018: Farrington Governors

By Nick Abramo on July 23, 2018

SIXTH IN A SERIES In simple terms from the outside looking in, it appears Daniel Sanchez has two jobs to do. One is to make sure that Farrington doesn’t fall back a step. The other, if can, is to put the pedal a little more to the metal within the next few years. Sanchez took over as the head coach for Randall Okimoto, who spent 16 years at the helm and compiled a 116-67-3 mark. Under Okimoto, the Govs were […]

PREPPING for 2018: McKinley Tigers

By Nick Abramo on July 22, 2018

FIFTH IN A SERIES The lowest of the low eras in McKinley football appears to be over. Under first-year head coach Pat Silva, the team made a huge breakthrough in 2017. The Tigers went 1-7, but got their first victory since the 2013 season. Between 2014 and 2016, McKinley went 0-7, 0-8 and 0-8. It got so bad, the team was forfeiting games due to a lack of turnout. So, it was a happy day last Sept. 15, when the […]

PREPPING for 2018: Castle Knights

By Nick Abramo on July 21, 2018

FOURTH IN A SERIES It’s Year 2 of the John Hao regime at Castle and there is a buzz in Kaneohe that the Knights are going to be competitive in Division I in the inaugural season of the OIA-ILH alliance. Castle went 3-6 in Hao’s first year, continuing the win-some, lose-some pattern. However, gone are all of those mega-teams up to the Open Division. Those are teams Castle had to contend with — and, more often than not, fall to […]

PREPPING for 2018: Kaimuki Bulldogs

By Nick Abramo on July 20, 2018

THIRD IN A SERIES Before coach David Tautofi arrived, Kaimuki football had some down years. After three winning seasons in a row under the now fourth-year coach, it’s possible that the Bulldogs might be ready to turn the corner and get that elusive championship. A bid for the OIA Division II title last year fell short in a 7-0 loss to Pearl City in the semifinals. One year earlier, it was a 19-14 semifinal loss to Waialua that ended Kaimuki’s […]

PREPPING for 2018: Leilehua Mules

By Nick Abramo on July 20, 2018

SECOND IN A SERIES Some coaches are more concerned with the fringe benefits of sports than what happens between the sidelines: making young men out of kids. Every year, Leilehua’s football coaches talk during their preseason interviews more about the classroom than X’s and O’s. That’s the case again this year with third-year head coach Mark Kurisu, just like it was before him with Nolan Tokuda. “One thing we live by is the three F’s — faith, family and future,” […]

PREPPING for 2018: Kahuku Red Raiders

By Nick Abramo on July 19, 2018

FIRST IN A SERIES When you’re already one of the two most renowned high school football programs in the state, there just simply isn’t much room to get better. Yet, that’s one thing that’s on Miki Ah You‘s mind. The Kahuku linebacker walks into the 2018 season aiming for the defensive unit he captains to be the best in school history. That’s really something, if it happens. In 2016, under coach Vavae Tata, Kahuku’s defense held 12 Hawaii opponents to […]

Former Damien player’s parents refile lawsuit

By Nick Abramo on July 18, 2018

The parents of former Damien football player and wrestler Keoua Kauhi refiled a lawsuit Monday — with some different wording — against the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and executive director Blane Gaison. On Friday, they dropped their original suit in U.S. District Court that challenged the league’s transfer rule. Kauhi rushed for 914 yards and five touchdowns for the Monarchs last year. He transferred to Saint Louis in March and applied for an exemption, but was denied. By ILH rule, […]
