Kelani Corbett joined an elite club. The Leilehua senior wrestler did it with four years of toil, and for her efforts, she received a smattering of boos amid the loud cheers at Blaisdell Arena. Those boo birds — fans of Corbett’s opponent Kapoina Bailey of Konawaena who appeared to have a problem with the officiating of their 168-pound final at the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships — are now in the past, as are all of the wrestlers who unsuccessfully took […]

Up, up, up — and a little down. In 2018, the OIA hosted more regular-season football games than in 2017, with more attendance and more money taken in, but the number of fans per game declined a little. Based on attendance figures supplied by Raymond Fujino, the league’s football coordinator, there was: >> A 64-percent increase in gate receipts before expenses (from $539,814 to $837,033) >> A 64-percent increase in attendance (from 76,157 to 119,254) >> A 62-percent increase in […]

Defending champ Leilehua in a groove, Kapolei without Cira Bartolotti

By Paul Honda on February 26, 2019

For two West side softball powerhouses, it’s a different perspective. The Leilehua Mules are defending state champions and ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10. Kapolei is at No. 8 and trying to move forward in a circumstance it has no control over. Hurricanes coach Keoke Behic has experienced just about everything in prep softball from his time as a coach at Pearl City — he guided the Chargers to a state title in 2006 — as an assistant […]
