Kohala coach Chad Atkins receives letter saying he will not be reinstated as football coach

Kohala’s Chad Atkins received a letter from principal Amy Stafford informing him that he will not be reinstated to the position of football coach. The letter, dated Dec. 20, came during Atkins’ struggle to get his job back. “When I told people about the letter, they said to me, ‘Oh, so you were fired,” Atkins said Thursday. The transition to Division I isn’t that tough for Damien. The Monarchs won the D-II state title last year with a team that was ranked in the Top 5 from beginning to end. Kamehameha boys basketball coach Larry Park chats after the Warriors edged Maryknoll 46-43 at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium on Tuesday. Kordel Ng scored 16 points and Christmas Togiai had 12 to lead the Warriors. Niko Robben and Sage Tolentino scored 16 each for the Spartans.

Maui girls take top two spots in pound-for-pound rankings

The pound-for-pound rankings shook up a little bit after last week’s epic 138-pound class at the Pa’ani Challenge that included three reigning state champions. Nanea Estrella of Lahainaluna reigned supreme in the bracket, beating both Paige Respicio of Kamehameha and Baldwin’s Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp. Estrella-Beauchamp and Respicio didn’t face each other, but the Baldwin senior does have a win over Estrella in the Garner Ivey MIT late last year, making them 1-1 against each other and pushing Estrella-Beauchamp to No. 2. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who announced Monday he will forego his final year of eligibility at Alabama and enter the 2020 NFL Draft, will serve as one of two honorary captains and attend the 2020 Polynesian Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Aloha Stadium. Nanea Estrella and Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp are cousins who put the hurt on each other often. Their great grandfathers were brothers, which means their grandfathers are cousins, and they have a lot in common. Both are multiple state wrestling title winners and both will be wrestling in college. Estrella, from Lahainaluna, is out to get her fourth state championship this spring. Malie Marfil scored 16 points, Camille Feary tallied 15 and Haley Masaki added 13 as No. 6 Kamehameha pulled out a 63-56 win over No. 5 Punahou on Tuesday night at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium.
