ON THIS DATE: Herbert Deverill of Punahou does the unthinkable

On this date in 1925, Herbert Deverill of Punahou broke a record in the half mile despite a slippery track around Alexander Field. He built a 10-yard lead in the first 100 and clocked a time of 51.4 seconds. He also contributed to a Buffanblu victory in the half mile relay as Punahou won going away. Click the image to zoom.

ON THIS DATE: LLWS heroes propel Saint Louis

On this date in 2011, Little League World Series heroes Kaeo Aliviado and Iolana Akau helped Saint Louis over Mid-Pacific in a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 on the Owls field. Saint Louis ended up winning the ILH and both schools lost their first games at states. They were supposed to finish with a matchup against each other for fifth place but the game was canceled due to rain. Click the image to zoom.

APRIL 3, 1998: Farrington’s Robynn Afe scores 29 in loss to Kahuku

On this date in 1998, the Kahuku girls basketball team proved that a balanced approach can overcome even the brightest star. Nine different Red Raiders scored points and Kahuku beat Farrington 49-45 despite Robynn Afe’s 29 points — 22 in the second half. Neither team was a match for Kalaheo for the OIA title but Kahuku made it to states where it lost both games, 67-59 to Konawaena and 34-29 to Waipahu. ON THIS DATE: Roosevelt dominates track and field

On this date in 1955, Roosevelt was the team to beat in every event in track and field. Tiki Vasconcellos‘ Rough Riders won 11 of 12 events and set seven records in meet the public schools championship. Their success wasn’t limited to public schools, though, as Roosevelt went on to sweep the Cornell Relays and Prep Championship later in the year. Punahou finished second in both.

On this date in 2013, The Punahou softball team went to the small ball to beat Kama Dung and Kamehameha. Heaven Wong and Sara Sumida reached on infield singles and Thalen Masada reached on an error before Kylie Popovitch squeezed in the go-ahead run in the fifth. The seeds of KIF baseball were planted early.  On this day in 1913, John Bush‘s Koloa team hosted Eleele School for a game and lost 12-6 in front of ‘a large and appreciative’ crowd. When Eddie Klaneski took his Damien football team to Washington to lose to Mt. Spokane in 2018, he was also giving three boys a glimpse of their future campus.
