Alissa De Smet’s late-bloomer charge to All-American status

Alissa De Smet is part of the state championship dynasty at Sacred Hearts Academy, but until last week, she didn’t quite know the extent of her talent. The senior was selected to the UCA All-American team, one of four Lancers on the varsity competitive cheer squad honored. Kamana Pimental scored from five yards out with 17 seconds left to break open a tie game and beat Iolani 42-35 at Aloha Stadium. To pursue her dream, Leiah Naeata had to make a heartbreaking decision. The Kahuku senior relocated to Las Vegas. The two-time Star-Advertiser All-State Fab 15 basketball selection flew to the “ninth island” on Independence Day and has never looked back. Year 4 of the Sacred Hearts Academy competitive cheer dynasty is as fierce as ever. The three-time state Hawaii High School Athletic Association Medium Division state champions are revved up despite the postponement of the sport until early 2021. Four of the Lancers earned All-American honors over the weekend from the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA). On this day in 1940, legendary coach Bill “Doggy” Wise outsmarted another foe. Wise dialed up a pass in the second quarter for the only score of the game and Punahou opened its season with a 7-0 victory over rival Kamehameha at Honolulu Stadium. On this date in 1957, Waimea opened its season in style with a 52-0 home victory over visiting Kohala. Menehune quarterbacks Melvin Muranaka, who was also student body president, and sophomore Wilfred Ibara paced the offense with each earning two passing touchdowns and a running score.
