On this date in 1969, two of the ILH’s all-time greats locked horns in Farrington’s 25-22 victory over Kalani at Honolulu Stadium. Governors running back Onosai Tanuvasa, the first ILH back to gain 1,000 yards in a season, gained 231 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns in the victory. The ‘Samoan Strongboy with the moves of a Kalihi belly dancer’ could have had even more yardage but he fumbled twice in the red zone. Tanuvasa did most of his damage […]

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2020

Football coaches across the state are asking, and there is still no definite date for the re-start of high school football practice. All they know is, there is hope if the number of new cases of COVID-19 can decrease significantly as the state implements mass testing. There are ifs aplenty across the board. If schools reopen in October, then air riflery and bowling may be able to start on schedule. The chances are “good,” Hawaii High School Athletic Association Executive […]

(This is the first of a three-part series about McKinley’s 3,200-meter run state champion, Jonathan Lyau.) Four decades ago, Coach Tom Marks handed sheets of graph paper to his runners at McKinley High School. The Tigers followed instructions, making copies of the gridded sheets, writing down precise mileage of their runs during and between seasons. One of them, Jonathan Lyau, never stopped journaling. Lyau hit the 100,000-mile mark on Wednesday, crossing a virtual finish line with son Spencer on the […]

On this date in 1982, Laotian soccer prodigy Sirideth Lanpouthakoun booted a 24-yard field goal with 3:32 left to help Kaimuki over Kahuku 3-0 at Roosevelt. A 24-yard chip shot would normally be no big deal, but Lanpouthakoun missed his previous two attempts (from 27 and 41 yards) in the defensive struggle. Michael Taamilo was a beast for Kaimuki against Kahuku’s formidible offense. He had three tackles for losses and helped hold quarterback Lane Santiago to 32 passing yards and […]
