On this date in 1987, Hilo ended Konawaena’s 40-game winning streak. The Vikings got five interceptions in the second half and Kamaka Mahoe hauled in a pass from Mark Ishii for the historic win. The Wildcats had not lost since 1982, when Hilo did the trick. Jay Auwae had two interceptions and Charleston Awai, Terry Nicolas and Jason Saturnio each had one but Konawaena quarterback Pat Acol still managed to throw for 274 yards. Kylie Yung is ready for Rainbows. The ‘Iolani basketball state champion has walked on at Hawaii, turning down opportunities to play at smaller universities. “She’s always told us that she wants to play Division I basketball even if it meant turning down other opportunities to walk on. Hope International G/F Kodee Viena transfers to Rainbow Wahine

Kodee Viena is taking the road home. The former Star-Advertiser All-State selection from Maryknoll has transferred to Hawaii after two seasons at Hope International (Calif.). She and another ILH hoopster, Kylie Yung of ‘Iolani, are walk-ons for the Rainbow Wahine. Viena was also an All-Defensive team pick by coaches and media as a senior in the 2017-18 season. Another month and another pitcher from the islands has committed to Loyola Marymount. ‘Iolani pitcher Aisea Ahokovi is the second pitcher in as many months say yes to the Lions. On Aug. 1, it was Kamehameha hurler Casey Kitagawa who did the same. “I feel amazing, like all the hard work is paying off,” said Ahokovi, who has a 3.2 grade-point average. On this date in 1993, future McKinley coach Sam Cantiberos scored five touchdowns to lead his Tigers to a 40-12 win over Radford. Cantiberos, a slotback, earned two of his scores receiving, another two rushing and added a kickoff return for 77 yards. A month into his new chapter, Kolbe Irei has been outmuscling the competition. The Roosevelt graduate, now at UC Irvine, finished tied for second place in the GCAA Amateur Series in Beaumont, Calif., a tournament that drew the best college golfers in the country. On this date in 2005, Alex Daniels had the biggest day for a running back in Radford history, but he still needed his defense’s help to keep the Rams unbeaten. Daniels ran for 263 yards and three touchdowns to lead Radford to a 35-13 victory over Moanalua at John Velasco Stadium.
