On this date in 1951, Roosevelt scored seven unanswered touchdowns to rout Punahou 45-7 and retain the once-prestigious Paintbrush Trophy. It was Roosevelt’s most lopsided victory in the 20-year rivalry between the schools. The Rough Riders fumbled the ball eight times but only lost one. Roosevelt’s defense made up for it by picking off seven Punahou passes. Henry George scored two TDs for Roosevelt and Roy Ryder, Richard Lum, Alfred Franco, Ralph Shultz and Lester Santos all scored for Roosevelt. […]

By Paul Honda on September 29, 2020

There is nearly no limit to the potential of Nolan Souza of Punahou, who committed to Arkansas over the weekend. “I feel great about it,” the Punahou sophomore shortstop said on Monday. “My parents (Brian and Kellie) are excited, too.” Souza has a 3.5 grade-point average. Punahou baseball coach Keenan Sue is supremely optimistic about his players, and that includes the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Souza. “There aren’t a many 6-3, left-handed swinging middle infielders,” Sue said on Sunday. “We’re all very […]

By Jerry Campany on September 28, 2020

The Buffanblu were outgained 306-67 but still managed to beat Kaimuki 13-12 on this date in 1962 at Honolulu Stadium. Future Star-Bulletin sports editor Bill Kwon and Punahou coach Dave Eldredge called it luck. Charley Wedemeyer‘s and Clint Albao‘s presence made it anything but. Wedemeyer took the opening kickoff 84 yards for a score and the […]

The junior was proactive about the process of recruitment. “I started reaching out about two years ago to both the beach and indoor programs. Due to the NCAA recruiting rules, I could not have direct […]
