Chanelle Molina acquiring taste for Swedish language, caviar

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2020

Coming off a 28-point, 13-rebound performance in the Norrköping Dolphins’ first win, Chanelle Molina explored her new stomping grounds. Sweden is a pretty big place, and she and her teammates are taking in the sights on rare days off. “I went to Stockholm this past weekend and it was huge. Didn’t see much because I was there only for a couple of hours, but I got to visit a local market and I found the tallest building so that I […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Iolani’s John Stephens succeeds after switch

By Jerry Campany on October 15, 2020

On this date in 1988, Iolani coach Eddie Hamada prioritized offense over defense and both units benefitted. Hamada gave John Stephens his first start at quarterback and Iolani shocked Kamehameha 24-0. Stephens started at linebacker through the Raiders’ 0-5 start to the ILH season and sprinkled in some action at quarterback in relief of Kaala Shea. He passed for a touchdown and ran for another in his first start, lofting a 25-yard pass to Michael Pila for a touchdown on […]

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2020

Maryknoll boys basketball standout Sage Tolentino gave an oral commitment to Auburn on Thursday morning. The 7-foot wing had received offers from Kansas, Tennessee State, then was offered by Auburn last week. On Wednesday, Cincinnati made an offer, but the talented sharpshooter made his decision less than 24 hours later. “My family and I have prayed about this day since I was a kid,” Tolentino wrote on social media. “I am beyond blessed and I give God all the glory. […]

Former Maryknoll hoopster Brian Washington considers 6 D-I offers

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2020

Freshman year at Maryknoll came to a heartbreaking end for center Brian Washington. After losing in the 2014 ILH playoffs, the 6-foot-8 center and teammate Justice Sueing Jr., the Spartans high-scoring sophomore, chatted outside the entrance door. Sueing had already spent some summer time jamming with Mater Dei, a California powerhouse. It was clear, even then, that if Washington and Sueing stuck together, Maryknoll would have the inside track to one, probably two state championships. “You better not leave,” Washington […]

Williams will coach Team Mauka in the nationally televised event scheduled for January 23. Dilfer will oversee Team Makai. Dilfer, currently the head coach of the Elite 11 quarterback camp, won the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens during his 14-year NFL career. Williams led Washington to a victory in Super Bowl XXII and was […]

By Jerry Campany on October 14, 2020

On this date in 1995, Punahou running back Afatia Thompson put on a show for the last time in his prep career. Thompson ran for 119 yards and three touchdowns as top-ranked Punahou blitzed Pac-Five 48-28 at Aloha Stadium. The Wolf Pack took an early lead before Thompson took over. The future UH fullback tied it with a 2-yard plunge and followed it up with scores from 10 and 13 yards. Thompson needed only 15 carries and one reception to […]

Kamehameha slugger, UH commit Pa‘a Elarionoff enjoying diamond life

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2020

The glove is often golden, and the bat is smoking hot. By Pa‘a Elarionoff’s standards, however, a weekend in the Arizona Junior Fall Classic wasn’t peak-performance level at the plate. Playing third base for Team Hawaii, he kept his focus on the squad. “I wish I could say I had a great tournament, but statistically, it’s not something to brag about. My bat seems to be sleepy,” he said from Arizona. “My dad (Grad) always says to contribute something no […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: Kamehameha rues Iolani’s return

By Jerry Campany on October 13, 2020

Iolani returned to the ILH after sitting out three years during World War II and didn’t take long to make an impact. On this date in 1945, coach Father Bray and all-star center Edward Hamada called on a couple of backups to make big plays and the Raiders stunned Kamehameha 14-0 in front of 12,000 fans at Honolulu Stadium. Bray countered Kamehameha’s superior size with frequent substitutions and it led to a surprising shutout of one of the league’s favorites. […]
